Olsen and his development

* Golden had strong words when asked about true freshman Kevin Olsen, saying the quarterback needs to be better in his preparation.

Golden’s comments, in full:

“He’s got to learn the game. He’s got to be obedient to a regimen to be a quarterback. It’s got to be the same every day. He’s got to be disciplined, in terms of that. He’s not there yet. He hasn’t owned the process yet. He’s got to improve the mental aspects of his game so that he can play the game fast.

“And he can’t waste this time. He can’t waste this year. He’s got to get better. He’s out here right now throwing — he’s got to. He’s got to be out here throwing every day. When we’re not throwing, he’s got to be throwing anyway. He’s got to be watching the way Stephen and Ryan [Williams] conduct themselves and how they they run the offense. He’s got to know every signal, every call. He’s got to make the right Mike [linebacker] calls on runs, get us in the right protections. He’s got to get going on that side, so he can play faster.”

Don't know what to make of this... either Golden is using this as a motivational technique for Baby Jesus to publicly read and take personally... or BJ is not the cerebral killer he is made out to be and is really struggling.

Susan Miller always starting drama.. asking about our 4th sting Qb who is a freshman.. what does she expect golden to say the kid dosent have work to do

Reading between the lines, sounds to me like Golden is saying that Baby Jesus is enjoying his Frosh year a bit too much, and not putting in the hours he should be to be at the level he will need to in order to compete for the starting job next season. Most of what was said there applies to the mental aspect of the game, and its not uncommon for Frosh to have issues like this, some of these kids are just very immature and need a year or two to settle down and get focused. That is why its a very good thing we have RW in the bull pen, IMO.

I just love the fact we have a coach who doesn't give anyone( including a guy redshirting) a free pass. This isn't a country club anymore

Again, the process, either adhere to it or get outta here...

We all know Olsen likes to party, he's just doing a bit too much of that currently.

I don't think you have to read between the lines. That was a pretty blunt assessment of Olsen and what he's not doing right. Looks like The Don is flat out lighting a fire under him publicly.

Sounds like Kevin needs to mature and focus more on his craft. I appreciate Coach Golden's candor, and I'll say preemptively no I do not think he threw young KO under the bus just a good coach sending a good player a strong message.

Yup. Golden has done it in the past. He called out Chick a few times, Howard, McGee etc. He expects greatness from certain players and he isn't afraid to push them. Maybe I am reading too much into it but it sure feels like on of those situations. If Olsen didn't have the potential I think he would be handling it with a little more care.

But again, that's why you need a guy who knows different ways to push different buttons.

Golden did something like this with B. Mcgee and Denzel, too... and both absorbed the criticism and improved.

I think the same will happen to Olsen.

Golden is molding his next great signal caller.

But first..

Yep. Not much of a secret that Olson fashions himself to be quite the party boy and enjoys the company of good looking coeds. Hopefully, this is his "scared straight" moment and he learns to balance his time more effectively.

Pretty clear as his career has unfolded, Golden values trust over anything.

If he can't trust you, you won't play here. Now there's obviously a huge spectrum of meanings to that, but it's why some should ease up when clamoring for backups/freshmen whatever. He has shown if he trusts you, you will play no matter who you are and I would take his word for it.

AU this sounds a LOT like Kyle Wright( I remember hearing some alarming things early in his career at UM). The difference is, Golden and Co will continue to bring in other talent to compete with him. Nobody is bequethed a starting spot in this program anymore

Not worried at all. Very hard to keep kids who know they aren't playing a snap fully motivated at a place like UM. Does this give Williams a built in advantage, sure does. It's a tiny piece of it, and we can expect them not to name a starter for next year until well into fall camp.

Honestly, I shirted my first year of college ball. I did the same thing. I had no worries and just had a great time that season. Luckily I have a really productive RS freshman year, but looking back I should have been more locked on that first RS season
