Olsen and his development

It would be a shocker to me if Williams is the starting qb next year

me too.

dudes arm makes ken dorsey look like a laser

i just dont think we could run much of our playbook. the whole game would have to be played in between the hashes

That's being way overblown. His arm looked pretty good on that throw to Scott against fau. His arm is more than adequate to run a college offense.

In a perfect world it would be Williams in 2014 with Olsen/Kaaya battling for the job in 2015. This is what I personally think will end up happening.

I've seen Olson a couple times in person. He looked smallish on TV when I saw him at the UA game, but is much taller in person. He's long and lanky. He looks like he's at least 6'3".

I agree. People make such ridiculous overblown comments about Williams' arm, based on little more than they had heard somewhere that he doesn't have a strong arm. Look at the throws he made in the scrimmages and spring game, and against FAU. As you stated, he doesn't have a cannon, but he has adequate arm strength and can make all but the most physically demanding throws. He also has nice touch on his throws. Barring an outstanding offseason by Olsen, I definitely see Williams as our starter to open next season.

The fake internet scouts and gurus get caught up in arm strength so they can use scout buzzwords like "ceiling". And they can say stuff like "he can really spin it". They forget that there have been a bunch of Heisman trophy winners and championship QBs (our own Steve Walsh and Ken Dorsey for instance) who couldn't break a pane of glass with their arms.

There's a lot more to playing great QB at this level than having a big arm. Accuracy is the number one component. Then, there's the ability to make quick decisions and to play in the clutch. Arm strength is behind all those variables.

Look at all those dudes that Leach plugged in over the years as seniors and the numbers they put up. They were all bums that no one wanted. Stop gap guys. But they stepped in and never skipped a beat. Williams is going to make a lot of fake gurus look dumb.

I just think it's funny that some posters on here were arguing with those of us that knew Olsen would be redshirted. No way in **** Golden lets this kid play a snap this season unless Morris and Williams (and maybe even Crow) go down.

Example #4,798,568 of how things are SUPPOSED to be done at a big program.

I agree. Let him put on some size and adjust to the speed of the game and hopefully improve his arm strength.

Either way, with Dewey out of the picture, next year will be a transition year. Play a RSF or a 5th year senior, or perhaps a true freshman. Crow is a backup.

The Olsens have deep ties to coach, from their UVA days (~decade). I think Kevin is being groomed to take over in 2014.

Remember when Dewey was going to be the savior and all the message board fans were infuriated Crow was offered a scholarship?

Good points about the accuracy. I've always thought arm strength was overrated in college. It can be a big factor (it definitely bails Morris out) but quick decisions, seeing the field, and accuracy can take you the distance in college. I mean Dorsey actually carved out a decent little NFL career for a guy with zero arm strength.

I thought Olsen's JR highlights were very early Dorsey-esque. Very nice accuracy, some mobility in the pocket, but he was dropping passes all over the field. Hopefully last year was just a hiccup for him, injury and development wise but his junior year is why I hold on to high hopes for him.

In all fairness Williams arm strength greatly improved since last year. He had a very weak arm when he first showed up here. He now has a much better arm. He throws a **** of a deep ball though. The pass to Scott against fau is a prime example of his touch. Unfortunately the sack against fau was a prime example of his feet (they're horrible).

Look, I got my guy out at practice.

Olsen is cerebral. He goes through his progressions very well. He's got surprisingly good pocket presence. The ball comes out quickly. His arm is average, but thanks to his ability to process things at a high speed it isn't an issue. He is naturally a more talented QB than Williams. It will be up to Golden if he feels Williams' experience outweighs his lack of talent compared to Olsen.

Franchise said Dorsey and Walsh couldn't break a pane of glass with their arms and that's just flat out WRONG.

They couldn't break a pane of balsa wood.

I REALLY hope this is true. Can make all the difference for QBs. Unfortunately, Morris is lackluster in this department

Pretty hard to judge pocket presence when the live bullets aren't flying, and the QB knows he's not going to get drilled in the back by a blind-side blitzer. Plus, I don't know how many reps a 4th string QB who is being RS'd is getting in practice anyway.

If Morris had that he'd be unstoppable.

I got no worries about his ability to eventually muscle a football around.
