Lets get back to reality.
Look, Im as ****ed as anyone else today. I am throughly disgusted with Donoforio and the defense.
But I actually expected us to f*ck up one of these last 3 games. I said at the very beginning I expected a 6-6 season. I said I would be pleased with 7-5, and DELIGHTED with 8-4.
On offense, I think we did what we needed to win. Anyone blaming Fisch for the last drive, come on. Look, if he throws it and stops the clock, we would have been here b*ching about how we gave them too much time and didnt work the clock enough. We complain every week that Fisch doesnt run the ball and chew up the clock to help the D, well that is EXACTLY what he tried to do.
This was on the Defense. PERIOD. IF you let a 3-6 team march 90 F*CKING yards down the field on you, TWICE, converting TWO 4th and 7th plays, you DESERVE to lose. Our defense was ONCE AGAIN garbage today.
NOW... I WILL cut the staff a BIT of slack. We were playing without 3 of our best players. There is a REASON that Eddie Johnson and Deon Bush are STARTING AS TRUE FROSH. Because they guys behind them are GARBAGE. Without DP, and our entire defensive backfield was lacking ANY playmakers today.
As for Donoforio, the guy is totally out of his league at this level. I have ZERO faith in the guy. He rushed exactly TWO, COUNT EM TWO guys on that last play, and actually dropped Curtis Porter into coverage on that final play. He rushed TWO F*CKING GUYS, giving that QB ALL F*CKING DAY to throw that ball, and to top it off, our GARBAGE secondary, let the SAME F*CKING GUY, get behind them in the endzone TWICE IN A ROW.
The ENTIRE defensive staff should be fired on this team.
That said, we arent far off where most of us expected to be. And look, losing those 3 starters, on a team that has NO depth, and is already full of young players all across the defense.
This team is going to be much better. I really feel we are on the cusp of greatness. I still think Golden was the best guy for he job, and the best we can hope to have in this situation. He is rebuilding the program from the ground up, and while this SUCKS right now, I REALLY do feel like we are going to see the fruits of all this pain PAY OFF starting next year. If it doesnt, you can bet I will be leading the charge to run him out on a rail.
But guys, its time to get real here. Were not about to fire our 3rd coach in 7 years. All we can do is hope that Golden's bottom up approach is going to pay dividends, and that he will upgrade the staff as he needs to. He will improve as a gameday coach, just like "Botch" Davis did. Will he be the next Jimmy Johnson? We dont know. But I do believe he is going to make us a contender again. All we can do is hope for the best, but look, this program is facing sanctions, has fired 2 coaches in the last 6 years, cannot pay what the giant state big football schools can, and we havent really been a top level program in almost a decade. We arent going to be getting a high caliber coach, so we are going to have to ride with Golden, and hope for the best.
Lets just all calm down, and hope for the best. We have to stop acting like this team is ready, and these kids are really at a level where they can execute consistently. YES the defense is a trainwreck, but it could have been better today had we had 3 key starters playing. Look, if the ACC was even mediocre this year, we would be in NO position to compete for jack sh8t, and most of us didnt expect to anyway.
Were not going to fire Golden. So ranting and raving about it, is not going to accomplish anything. If nothing else, we need to be practical at this point, and hope we can get another good recruiting class in and that we dont get hammered by the NCAA. Its time we got real, modify our expectations, and hope for the best.
Thank you for some perspective c4l. The voice of reason.
A lot of good in that above post.
