£70m for a 30 year old moving to a physical league on a long term deal of £350k a week. What could go wrong.
They currently start McFred. Massive upgrade in a position they have neglected for several years.£70m for a 30 year old moving to a physical league on a long term deal of £350k a week. What could go wrong.
He is a great player but 1) time waits for no one and there’s a lot of miles on his legs, 2) It reflects on their issues in recruitment strategy, 3) the move from the Spanish league to the EPL is always a tricky one, and 4) at some point they need to buy younger players on lower wages with resale value if developed properly. They are still an absolute mess. They currently start McFred. Massive upgrade in a position they have neglected for several years.
No argument about the #GlazersOut mess that is United. We will see how it works out both in the long term and the short term. But panic buys rarely work out, and that size fee/wages to an older player is a risky game. You don’t see successful clubs employing that strategy. Look at the mess Barca got themselves into by moving away from their successful business model of relying on La Masia. No argument about the #GlazersOut mess that is United.
He could be 75 years old, and would still be a massive upgrade over McFred. He is 30, and he is the enforcer they need to sit behind Fernandes and Eriksen. This move made United better than they were last week.
And it is a panic buy, but that is how the Glazers operate. That’s why they suck. At least it will make the club appealing for Elon when he prepares his offer for the club.

Sure but they also had one glaring hole on that team which was the reason they lost the prior year on GD and a super strong culture. For every RVP there are many more Schweinsteigers. That’s like guys on the recruiting board that pointed to Ed Reed every time Manny took some reach recruit.Wasn’t Robin Van Persie 30 when United panic bought him?

It is a hole, but that’s not what I said. Only hole. They still have many others, too many for one window with a new manager. They need to do what ****nal did over the last couple of summers. That does not involve 30 year old players on 350k a week that you won’t be able recoup and reinvest the transfer fee on.Glaring hole:
Manchester United Conceded More Goals than Relegated Burnley
Manchester United’s tally of 57 goals conceded in the Premier League this season is their most in a top-flight campaign since 1978-79 (63), which also contributed in them failing to have a positive goal difference in the Premier League for the first time ever.
Those 57 goals conceded were four more than relegated Burnley (53) – the first time that United had conceded more goals in a top-flight league season than a relegated club since 1976-77, when their 62 goals conceded were more than relegated sides Sunderland (54) and Stoke City (51).
Overall, Man Utd conceded eight goals against the three relegated sides in the Premier League this season – only Everton conceded more often (11) across those encounters versus Watford, Norwich and Burnley. The Red Devils also won 11 of a possible 18 points in these games. Both Manchester City and Liverpool won maximum points (18/18) in these matches.
But surely you understand the different metrics behind the two different panic buys. The Van Persie panic buy occurred because Fergie was a winner, and had lost the league on goal difference. PS there were other holes on that club. The Casemiro panic buy occurred because the Glazers goal is to sneak into the top 4, so they can continue to exploit the club’s commercial success to fund their dividends and stock value. And they were facing a revolt by United fans, which threatened their use of the club as their piggy bank. A HISTORICALLY bad defense is by far the greatest impediment to this Glazer goal. Nobody who closely follows the Premier League thinks otherwise. United have needed a world class CDM for years, and they just bought the best.It is a hole, but that’s not what I said. Only hole. Van Persie was not a panic buy. He was an established PL scorer who they bought for 25m and the only reason his transfer stretched on was because it was a controversial transfer from ****nal’s end. He was as low risk as low risk goes with no adjustment needed to the physicality of the league and low cost. Again, they literally had every other piece in place and only lost the season before because they couldn’t score. It’s a terrible analogy. But surely you understand the different metrics behind the two different panic buys. They need to rebuild the entire defense, and yes Casemiro is great, but by the time the other pieces are in place and acclimated he will be aging. This is also not mentioning who knows if his style works in the PL. The question isn’t whether he is a good player or not. It is whether he is the guy MU needed and their entire strategy to build a cohesive squad. You’re conflating him being a good player, MU needing a CDM, and whether he is the right one for where their team is right now.
It was supposed to be Fergie’s final year. He lost the league on goal difference. So he stayed on another year and bought a 30 year old striker. Apparently not a panic buy. It’s Ten Hag’s first year. He’s 0-2 including a 4-0 loss to a ***** team. The club has needed a CDM for years, their most glaring weakness for years. They’re coming off a historically bad defensive year. They need to finish top 4 this year. They buy a 30 year old CDM, arguably the best in futbol. Apparently not analogous. Lulz.ESPN, while not the best for soccer, summarizes it well. Big money transfers over 30 don’t usually end well. That’s just the reality.
Casemiro's Man United transfer fee is second-biggest ever for a player over 30
Only Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Juventus cost a higher fee for an over-30 player than the one Manchester United will pay Real Madrid for Casemiro.www.espn.com
I didn’t say Casemiro was a panic buy. You did. There’s two weeks left until the deadline. I wouldn’t say anything is a panic move right now, and if it is then you should replace your Director of Football. It was supposed to be Fergie’s final year. He lost the league on goal difference. By the way, in the last 2 years they’ve bought the Ajax player of the year and a 4 time champions league winner for central defense. Add now add in the best CDM in futbol, and hopefully the sale of Maguire, and let’s see what else happens before the window closes.
And double lulz at using ESPN as a source.
/didn’t read.
Director of Football ain’t the problem at United, but I’m sure you know that. I’m not excited about Casemiro joining, it’s a necessary but not sufficient move. I’m just glad they have the midfield destroyer that they should’ve had for years, instead of McFred. It is very clearly a panic buy, but a good one at least for a couple of years. Will it help them reach 4th place? Depends what else happens in the next week or so.I didn’t say Casemiro was a panic buy. You did. There’s two weeks left until the deadline. We will see how Lisandro works out. Are they playing him on the left or central? Is he fast enough for the left and is he big enough for center?
Will be fun to revisit this later in the season, but I have a feeling you also were very excited about Pogba rejoining a couple of years ago and Sancho last year.
I am praying Chelsea take Maguire, but we need 3-4 more transfers to even have a shot of sniffing the Top 6.Glaring hole:
