Leonard Hankerson looks like a different player than he did a year ago. Not only is he holding onto the ball better, he looks more fluid as he runs his routes. He was a college kid at this time last year, he’s learning how to be a pro now.

"I'd bet on Santana Moss as the slot receiver with Garcon and Hankerson as the starters outside." -- @espn_nfceast:

Grant Paulsen ‏@granthpaulsen
Today's standouts: Ryan Kerrigan (consistently got into backfield, generated QB pressures in 11on11 work), Leonard Hankerson(open all day).

Chris Wesseling ‏@ChrisWesseling
"It wouldn't be a stretch" to say Josh Gordon & Travis Benjamin have been best WRs in #Browns camp -- @viccarucci:http://bit.ly/NSSJvv

Allie LaForce ‏@ALaForce
Shurmur on WR Travis Benjamin: "He has distinguished himself the last couple of days catching the ball in traffic"

Chris Adamski ‏@BuzzsawPGH
L.Woodley on rookie LB Sean Spence:"He reminds me of Lawrence Timmons. Once Sean Spence learns this defense he can a real player."#Steelers

Jerry McDonald ‏@Jerrymcd
Also looking good _ cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke. He's getting his hands on a lot of passes in the secondary.

Through the first two days of practice Van Dyke has been turning heads with his improved play. Making the most of Ron Bartell’s absence from practice thus far DVD is running with the first team defense and if things keep up he could be staying with that unit.

I Love seeing canes blossom in the league....... I like this threads potential

vey nice thumbs up.webp

Travis Benjamin could be an all rookie selection this year.

And Hankerson was talked about being uncoverable last year in training camp. One local reporter said one day that what he enjoyed most was watching Hankerson and DeAngelo Hall go at it. Said Hall's was the only guy who was able to cover him and even for him it was a 50/50 thing - was living up that way this time last year. Big difference is that Hank was still dropping too many.

And can add Omar Kelly's tweets about Lamar Miller. Saying he knew he was good but didn't realize he was this good. Quotes from other Dolphin players about him breaking big gains routinely too. Looking forward to seeing Hard Knocks to see how he's portrayed.

Detroit Lions training camp observations: With pads on, FB James Bryant brings the pain Justin Rogers | jrogers@mlive.com 07/31/2012 3:50 PM

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions put on the pads at training camp for the first time on Tuesday. Here are some notes and observations from the team's fifth day of practice.

-- Fullback James Bryant was clearly excited to start delivering hits. In an early portion of practice, the Lions worked on some short-yardage runs. Bryant delivered punishing blocks on back-to-back snaps, opening up some nice running lanes for the backs. After each of those collisions, Bryant let out a scream and pounded his chest as teammates whooped and hollered.

Wow...didn't know Bryant was back in football. The last I read he was trying to break into boxing like Quad Hill was.

Hwo have we sucked for so long? We have young guys in the league doing their thing. smh

Seems like Benjamin and DVD have been the early standouts:

"We knew he had the skill to be able to play in this league," Shurmur said. "I think if both [Benjamin and rookie receiver Josh Gordon] progress like they're doing, at the pace they're going now, they'll be major contributors."

"He's made some very, very good plays," Spencer said. "He's a very quick corner, a very fast corner, and a very long corner as well. He has great instincts. I'm very impressed with the young man's game."

Raiders coach Dennis Allen likes what he's seen, but wants more.

"He's been consistent. He still makes some young-player mistakes that we've got to get coached out of him, but he makes a little bit of progress every day," Allen said. "He's not where he needs to be yet, but he's got to continue to work and continue to keep getting better and learn the little nuances of the game."

DVD always got a bad rap here, but he played pretty good after his freshman year. I'm rooting for him.

He just wasn't very physical here and was a liability in run support, couple that with the fact that he didn't show a lot of ball skills, dude got some negative heat on the boards.

Glad to hear he's turning it on in the pros.

Glad to see Bryant is in a camp, thought he could've been a beast at FB for us.

-- It was a good afternoon for rookie receiver LaRon Byrd from Miami. He made a great one-handed catch against cornerback William ***. Byrd started to run away when *** came from behind and punched the ball out. A veteran move. A rookie mistake. Byrd had a nice grab later in practice.

--Red zone: After a day off, the Browns got back to work in the red zone, which was more like the dead zone last season. But things looked promising, with Brandon Weeden finding tight end Jordan Cameron in the end zone in 11-on-11s and Colt McCoy firing one in to rookie Travis Benjamin when the second team took over.

--Another safety who hasn't been mentioned much is Jojo Nicolas, who made a nice breakup on a deep pass early in practice.

--Credit CB Brandon Bing and S Jojo Nicolas with some good coverage on a few plays. Bing was stride-for-stride with Randle on a go route. Nicolas keeps impressing the coaches in spurts.

--The Cowboys have tried Harland Gunn at center, but he fumbled a snap and is trying to take the next step, so he might be another year away. info on him at their site http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/article-1/Getting-To-Know----Harland-Gunn-Getting-Plenty-Of-Reps/2ed56df2-6d4f-499e-b111-d0ae755c00a1

--It was interesting to see rookie Lamar Miller get first-team snaps today. If you're a loyal reader of this blog or my columns, you know I really liked the Miller draft selection by Miami. Well, today he got the repetitions with the first team in team drills at the end of practice.

He didn't do antyhing in those eight plays but did a nice job with the second-team on Inside-the-30 work earlier in practice when he took a pitch and went around right end for 10 yards. A defender had the angle on him and he simply outran him to the edge. A safety was the only player between Miller and a TD.

Miller's speed has made him a candidate for kick and punt return duties since camp began. He's running second- or third-team on kick returns today (depending on the day) behind Steve Slaton with Marcus Thigpen also getting second-team work.

--Offensive lineman Brandon Washington has a concussion and is out a few days.

non Rooks:

--CB Bruce Johnson had a good practice today. He was very aggressive in coverage and tight to the receivers.

---- [Jason] Fox got the better of Kyle Vanden Bosch on one particular play during 11-on-11 drills. Vanden Bosch charged hard at Fox, who was playing left tackle at the time. Fox responded by grabbing Vanden Bosch and throwing him to the ground.
article on him here: http://www.freep.com/article/20120731/SPORTS01/307310159/detroit-lions-jason-fox

--Both fared better in 7-on-7s, where Sanchez was 5-for-7 in 7-on-7s and Tebow was 4-for-6, though one of Tebow's passes was a deep ball down the middle that landed right in the hands of [Dedrick] Epps, who dropped the ball.

Great stuff Staybon. Glad to see Bruce Johnson is back, he was on his way to a nice career before blowing out his Achilles.
