Offensive Philosophy in 2013

I look forward to NOT yelling run the ******* rock at my TV as often. I love the big plays down te field but I love more the ability to run down the defense's throat with the big uglies be have on the OL.

I think people get confused about the term. So I'll clear it up.

"Every down back" does not mean 40 carries a game. It means the back can play under any circumstance 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th down. Long, Medium, Short yardage. Can catch and can block.

Love the football talk guys!

By no means do i think anyone is trashing Duke. We all love the kid, and love what he means to our team. However, last year he took some big hits, and I recall him tapping his helmet, in a gesture for someone to spell him on several occasions.

Doesn't mean he's not a tough kid, and that he's not a dynamic playmaker at all; However, he's 5'9 183lbs...

His RB coach was quoted as saying he'd like for duke to play at around 185 and 190lbs, so maybe he'll get there by the end of UTough, who knows...

Sure Duke plays on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down, and even throws the ball on occassion :)

But, for the sake of conversation, im just asking this question specifically:

Can Duke carry the ball for a whole 4 quarters, in multiple consecutive series (1st thru 3rd down), taking shots up the middle from 6'3, 245lbs Linebackers and 300lb D-Lineman, running over and through guys, over and over, as the main feature back?

Very few backs are asked to play every snap in back to back series. The ones that do end up like Lattimore or AD( aware of AD's recoup but doesn't negate the fact he went down) and there's plenty others on the list.

Even if we had a 6'2'' 225 lb monster I wouldn't want him to get every single snap in two consecutive, moderate length drives. Being a Cane means we usually have the luxury of multiple talented backs. Had we not brought in some short sighted kids, Storm Johnson and to a lesser degree Miller, we would not be counting on bringing in a top level back for this year. Unfortunately Miller was a beast and Johnson was afraid to compete. Still I think we have guys on the roster that can get D[]_[]KE the relief he needs. I have always been an OT fan and I am looking forward to seeing him get his touches this season. If he gets beat out then so be it but, I think he will lock up the #2 spot in spring. We should have just as explosive of an offense as last year and that will also limit the number of yards D[]_[]KE will need to get us on the ground.

Coaches will usually ride the clear #1 early in the game but after a couple lengthy drives they would like to get the kid some rest if he's been work horsin it. Also the chnage of pace/style of a new back is good to throw at the D.

Ideally you start a drive with the feature guy and let him run 6-8 snaps at most then give him a blow. Depending on how the offense is going and his production on the drive 8 plays might be way overshooting. Typically when teams are driving slowly they get the starter a rest when they get around the 50 in that area where the playbook is wide open. The starter gets back in around the 30 unless they get there with a chunk yardage play, then he might sit a bit longer. If the Offense reaches goal to go you might see a short yardage guy get snaps. Even in goal to go situations D[]_[]KE got touches this season which says a lot about how the coaches felt about his durability. If we get the big plays we got last season in the passing game you should see D[]_[]KE get 3-4 touches in a drive with the #2 getting a couple also. That's roughly 6-8 a quarter and between 24-32 a game, factoring 3 and outs and the opponents driving occasionally. I would feel comfortable with those numbers for D[]_[]KE. I'm also optimistic that D[]_[]KE will see the bench in 3 or 4 second halfs this season while the youngsters do a little mopping up in garbage time.
