OC Discussion Thread

I'm all for Glen Thomas from the Falcons, or John Donovan from Vandy.

Thomas definitely has a better resume (coaching wise), and has more experience as a play caller. He seems to be the most similar to Fisch.

Donovan brought real improvement to a Vandy offense and he seems to be an up and coming coach. Plus, on paper, he is one smart dude (Johns Hopkins graduate...Masters in Economics from GTech). He's also a NJ guy, and I'm sure Golden would love that.

I have been through 15 pages of threads but I would like this do be dedicated to if he is a good coach or just a recruiter.

My feeling is, the offense is our strength and we need someone who can come in and continue to teach our QB's and draw up a good offensive game plan. Below I have laid out some of my concerns.

  • I am finding mixed things on him as far as what he actually does. FSU's website says he is the OC/QB coach but the very first line of his bio says "James Coley is in his fifth season at Florida State - third as the offensive coordinator and fifth as tight ends coach."

He would be the third guy on our staff who has recently been a Tight Ends coach. Where between Coley, Carroll, and Mario am I supposed to get excited about their ability to coach up the QB's

  • FIU's offense ranked #117 out of #120 his year as OC

I know they didnt have any talent but that is not a lot to get excited about.

The positives:
  • He has been on Sabans staff. It was as an offensive assistant so lets hope he learned a lot from the experiences.
  • It looks like at some time in his career he has coached every position on the offense

So does anyone have any ideas about what type of coach he is? We know he can recruit.

This is a very good question, but how would anyone really know if he can or not? Everybody has an opinion, which is what the boards are all about, but nobody has a clue if he is a technically sound coach or not.

So Golden just goes out and destroys FIU and FSU

Golden just ***king gets it and will eat your babies and you'll just sit there and admire him as he does so......

FIU kind of did. they gave us the finger when we tried to build the stadium in Tropical park.

FYI - FIU regrets not building the stadium at Tropical Park with Miami. They need the land and parking lots for campus expansion and their President Mark Rosenberg, reportedly is not entirely happy with their stadium particularly compared to FAU's new structure.

Huh

after we decided to move out of OB, UM admin and FIU admin tried to build a shared stadium at Tropical park.

UM offered them everything
1: to carry more of the cost
2: naming rights.

but FIU AD wanted FIU's own stadium so he essentially killed the Tropical park idea for the time being.

Even if Coley isn't hired, it's still ****ing in FSUs cornflakes. Golden should get rumors like this out there every year just to mess with them.

The university needs to go ahead and buy tropical park, just in case we need it one day

would this make any sense for our team right now?

if worst comes to worst, we would be able to hire a WR or TE coach and throw Mario in as OC.

it could end up working well for us if we aren't able to find a solid OC right now. we could use Mario as a temporary OC for a year or two until someone we would be interested in opened up. of course, a temporary position would be talked about with Cristobal before anything was planned.

would this make any sense as a possibility? or would it cause too much inconsistency on the staff to have him in for a season or two and then implement a new OC's scheme shortly after?
