Observations after a week of practice

Of course, one hopes the players allowed to sit out spring ball are mature enough to maintain their fitness and not simply partying, drinking and eating their way through the NIL.
I think that’s why it’s limited to Seniors/5th year guys you can trust.
Also, they know the playbook & don’t need 3 weeks of “install” like the younger guys.
They have the summer workouts to stay in shape & fall camp to practice actual football 100%.
ND will use all spring to pick a pecking order of QB going into the fall. No way all three stay. They will get their top 2 to battle in the fall & the third will probably go in the post spring portal.

The “Elija Lofton is the best player on the team” take basically means that he is the best all around football player on the team, pound for pound.

For example, hypothetically, if each team were made to choose one player to clone and comprise the entire 85-team with, our coaches would choose Elija Lofton and they believe we’d win the championship in that format. Lofton playing QB, OL, RB, CB, LB, S, WR, TE, DT, DE, P, PR, KR, and PK would win the NC over any other one player comprised team of another roster.
Idk man, I'd just choose the absolutely most athletic big Islander in the country - possibly Mauigoa... You're going to dominate on the OLine. And those mother****ers will run down your throat. And on defense they'll dominate on the DLine, and you can player super conservative at DB.

Like in the NFL a team of Penei sewells is destroying everyone. That ************ can block run catch and throw at a ridiculous level.

He’s not a high end draft pick but when healthy he makes plays.
you can win with him, not as a starter but a contributor on the back end. Assuming your top end are mostly high level NFL talent. Same as the other top schools or natty winners thats how they do it, its not some magical juice the uniform gives you. Its the talent

If Beck is 100.0%, I’ll be shocked if this team isn’t very good.

The OL and DL should be very good. It’s almost hard to suck as a football team if you kick people’s asses on both sides of the line.

This should be one of the 5-15 best teams in the country. The way Mario has acquired talent and a HEALTHY Beck gives this team a pretty high floor, imo.
Agree.
The Notre Dame game has to be a game where the Irish melt in the Florida sun, and Miami conditioning wins out.
Then, it's state championship mode... we have a mini playoff to start.
We have to be undefeated heading into the @SMU game.
Win 2 out of 3 in the late away games makes us 11-1 and playing Clemson in the ACC CG.

I don’t like counting purely on unproven guys. Too much risk. Make them win the starting spot against better competition. If we think Wes, Chase and Aldermen are ACCCG LBs then fine. If we exit Spring ball with questions there, then you must bring in another top quality LB. I’d have started back channeling in November for one.
Lets face it those 3 havent been ACC quality LB! Definitely need a LB

They tried to get a LB in the winter portal, they know they need one in the spring portal

We need a Mike. I don't see Wes as a MLB. It is almost critical that we get a MLB in the portal. Get a LB plus a Safety and this D has a chance of being completely the opposite of last season. Like top 25 maybe, which sounds crazy from what we had last season. I also think Mack at nickel is huge. I am weary of Brantley. Certainly his health.
If Emory stays, he is going to be the backup QB. I believe that is already known. I would love a vet backup QB with experience. More than Emory. I will keep pounding the drum for a slot and outside WR in the portal. I love our WR room, but I can't chance the season on unproven talent. Expand the **** rotation. Everyone has opinions, those are mine.

ND game is a night game so it may be humid but won’t be any sun

It’s incredible to hear that about a guy who was lightly featured last year. Guessing he won’t be RB1 so it’ll be interesting to see how we utilize that talent. Good problem to have
He is a half back and that was always his position. And the beauty of a halfback is, they do everything. They run the ball like a tail back, they blocked like a tight end and they rout people up like a wide receiver. And the reason you don’t see halfbacks much anymore, is because it’s such a rare player that can truly feel that position and we got one in Lofton. I’m very excited to see him be deployed this year.

From Canesport, Lofton's press conference last week:

Lofton also spoke about new QB Carson Beck. And let’s not forget that a couple of years ago Beck did have the NFL TE star Brock Bowers as his top target at Georgia. Bowers led UGA with 56 catches and 714 yards with six TDs.

“He’s definitely a leader even though he’s not practicing right now,” Lofton said. “He talks to me about routes and the game. He tells me what he sees, if he was in what he wants me to do and stuff like that.”

Lofton says he studies film of NFL tight ends Brevin Jordan, Travis Kelce and George Kittle.

“More in the route game – get open, find space,” Lofton said.

Lofton went to the same high school as Jordan and the two are in regular contact.

“Brevin is like a big brother to me, gives me advice, anything I need,” Lofton said. “He takes care of me.”

Lofton says last year he learned blocking from Cam McCormick and the route game from Arroyo.

“I learned play physical and believe in yourself,” Lofton said. “Just go out there and do you, just ball out. … (Last year) I learned the speed of the game, it’s a big difference from high school to college.”

Naw man Malik Bryant had some big moments last year for us in his 2nd year. He looks even bigger this offseason too in the practice photos
Agree, 100%, people forget that he was a pass rushing defensive/outside linebacker in high school and we tried to turn him into an inside linebacker here, but smartly put him back at his natural position. He’s an elite pass rusher from that position and I think he’ll have a big year for us this year.
