now that the smoke has cleared, top 10 portal qbs and their destination

I'd remove Jaren Keawe from the list bc he shouldn't be in the transfer rankings. They should just count that as Cal's recruiting class.

Then I'd rank like this:

1. Beck
2. Mateer
3. Arnold
4. Mensah
5. Moss
6. Mendoza
7. Kromenhoek
8. Murphy
9. Michael Van Buren
10. Connor Weigman

Dropped Air Noland out.
The correct term is air dropped Air Noland out

Mensah is a talent at Q. Will he have the offensive players around him to be better than he was at Tulane? I know they have some explosive guys in the backfield that they can get creative with. I’m not sure if it’s a huge difference compared to Tulane. But the Duke team as a whole should be marginally better than Tulane.
They lost practically everyone that made plays this year.

Mateer. He’s got a much higher ceiling than Beck IMO. Beck has a higher floor. If we had a roster loaded with talent on both sides , it would make sense to take the more accomplished qb with the higher floor, even if he isn’t quite the playmaker that Mateer is. The roster still has a lot of holes and I think Mateers ability to make something out of nothing (like Cam Ward did ) would be more valuable right now.
Beck’s ceiling is the #1 overall pick. Not sure there’s a higher ceiling. Mateer is a very different player. He’s more in the mold of the traditional air raid guy where he has one or two reads and looks to run. He was very effective in WSU’s system but there’s a huge difference in the competition he played against than what Cam Played against while there. And it’s miles away from what Beck played against at UGA. Obviously the arm injury is a huge factor but a healthy Beck is not only a better player but he’s faced much better competition and is a better fit for the offense we’ve run under Dawson.

Are you sure that was the timeline?
are you sure it was manny's decision? manny makes strange moves but maybe murphy is a west coast kid and wanted to take a bag? why do people assume that manny pushed him out?

it's more likely that Murphy asked for more after a solid year, and/or told him he was leaving so duke got desperate and gave mensah an insane bag (the best realistic qb option for them at the time)

I’m not sure of anything when it comes to this stuff. Your explanation is as good as any I’ve heard. Was he pushed, or did he jump? We may never know for sure. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Mensah does more for Duke than Murphy did, though.

Bud Elliot has said that he had heard that they lowered Murphy NIL deal and he bounced out after that. So if that's true that means they pushed him out. I kinda wanna believe Bud Elliot on this one

I thought so but even if not, they definitely upgraded. Murphy was not good. You can look at his numbers and say “he wasn’t too bad” but you could say the same thing if you just looked at Duke’s record. If you actually watched the games, he struggled and Duke’s offense was really bad.

Mateer will need to improve as a passer to have same success in SEC.

20 of his 29 passing TDs came against Portland State, San Jose State, Hawaii, Utah State, and New Mexico. Not even good G5 teams.

He played 2 P4 teams Washington and Texas Tech. He was 26-53/49 %/366 yards/2 Tds/2 INTs

He can run though. He ran all over Texas Tech.

I agree. Mateer’s best attribute is his running ability. If you cater the offense to a run first guy, he can be very effective. A lot of his big passing numbers came against low G5 opponents so that gave me pause when we were trying to sign him. I think a lot of people were quick to compare him to Cam Ward because same school, same coach/OC but the scenarios were very different. Cam had to carry his team against much more talented PAC 12 opponents. Mateer had the luxury of only playing three games against P4 opponents and none of them were particularly good teams. They played 8 Mountain West opponents and an FCS team. At Oklahoma, Mateer and the Sooners will be underdogs in half their games next year. They won’t have the talent advantage over every team they play. I think his skills can transfer and the fact that he’s playing in the same system for the same coach really helps but it’s going to be very interesting.

this ... we may not have liked beck' game in comparison to the #1 pick, but to turn around and say mateer is better is being the ultimate hater ... and i am a mateer fan

To me, it’s just that they’re different players. Both can be effective if matched to the right system. Mateer is a running quarterback. Which is different than a quarterback who can run. You need to use a lot of designed quarterback run with him to maximize his potential. Whereas guys like Cam or even Beck are quarterbacks who CAN run but are better throwers and are usually only running to avoid pressure or when all pass options are exhausted. Very little of Shannon Dawson’s offense has shown a reliance on the quarterback run game. He had Clayton Tune in Houston and he ran A LOT. But it was mostly called pass plays that turned into scrambles. Cam was a VERY capable runner but Dawson might have called three designed QB run plays all year. Cam had the ability to pick up first downs with his feet but it was almost always after dropping back, scanning the field and having no option to throw.

I prefer Beck in our offensive system to Mateer the same way I preferred Cam to Will Howard last year. Both good players but one guy fits what we’re trying to do and the other guy would require a shift in offensive philosophy.

Beck can scramble and play make too, people think he’s just a pocket passer and that’s not the case, he’s a big-time athlete too.
I agree but i think Mateer is just a lil more dynamic, for the record I think Beck will have a great year against the ACC if we can land a big time WR1
