He wasn’t the top portal qb by any rankings outside of Canes message boards. He was the #1 QB last year in hindsight, which is the only ranking that matters.

Hopefully Beck will be #1 portal QB now and after next season.

More than anything, allows us to build momentum with possible first round QBs in back to back years.

Mateer. He’s got a much higher ceiling than Beck IMO. Beck has a higher floor. If we had a roster loaded with talent on both sides , it would make sense to take the more accomplished qb with the higher floor, even if he isn’t quite the playmaker that Mateer is. The roster still has a lot of holes and I think Mateers ability to make something out of nothing (like Cam Ward did ) would be more valuable right now.

I agree I think Mateer would’ve did more damage behind this oline and surrounding talent because of his ability to scramble/playmake

Yup. Some "experts" even had Howard ahead of him. So many on this board (justifiably) focus on how great Cam was for us. But Miami was also great for Cam. Our OL was great at protecting him and we had one of the top WR groups in the country and our OC played a perfect offense for him. It was a massive win for both sides.

I don't think we can expect things to work out so ideally with Beck, but if our defense improves substantially we still might be as good as last year.

Ward was the highest rated QB in portal last year of experienced starters. There were 1 or 2 players above him strictly off potential. Cam and Will Howard were the highest rated “win now”

LOL - why are we arguing about this? I didn’t even know there was a “Win now” portal transfer ranking, lol.

I think the staff did an amazing job evaluating the qb class, honed in on our preferred pick and then got lucky with the river card of him deciding to come back. But Ward wasn’t the defacto #1. And in alot of ways, at that particular moment in time, it was probably for our benefit that he wasn’t the defacto #1, because I’m not sure we would have won an all out bidding war if that was the case.
