Not looking good for Spence's career

All of which explains why the Steelers, one of the perennially best defenses in the NFL, had him in the two deep before his injury and is holding a roster spot for him in spite of him not being able to play this season. Yeah, makes sense.

Hope he can make it....

....but the kid was not one of the great Cane LBs. I actually think most fans overrate [him]., not underrate him, due to how he was used as a frosh in the zone blitz scheme.

He had good instincts, but was too small, slow, and showed no weight room dedication to be considered one of the great Cane LBs.

I hope your not serious with this comment.

Guy had what, seven reps of 225??? For a LINEBACKER???

I could care less that one game into the preseason the Steelers had him in their two deep.

Calling him one of the great Canes LBs is outrageous.

Im not gonna put him in the armstead, barrow, lewis, morgan, williams, vilma, beason etc.... Category just yet he has the potential to be a beast if he can get healthy... He did have over 300 tckls and 10 sacks and a whole bunch of other stats that im not gonna look up and this is from someone who is called "slow & undersized"!!!!!!!

His solid and commendable stats dont change the fact that he was slow, weak, and undersized. He was still an extremely productive player. But as you stated, he has no business being listed among the greats. THAT is all I'm saying. It's unfathomable than anyone who watched our greats play would even consider Sean Spence among them.

I am not 100% on this, but the 12 reps you keep talking about was following an injury (shoulder) pre-combine if I remember correctly. In an interview I think he was asked about it and basically said, while of course i wanted to do better, I wanted to demonstrate I show up everyday and so that's why he tested.

Well Sean Spence can continue to Rehab then get a job as an NFL Qualify Control Guy for a Team.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/sports/football/27quality.html?_r=0

HE can do that for another 2 yrs then hopefully move up in some NFL's team organization or return to UM as a Grad Asst get his masters while living off of the money he made in the NFL. Then go coach at a Mid-Major FBS school that would love to have a Former UM All-American with some NFL Coaching experience that has ties to south Florida for recruiting purposes. I would love to see him go to Michigan and be a grad asst and study under Greg Mattison that guy is a defensive genius and I am sure Ray Lewis could put in a good word with Mattison for Sean.

Go Canes!

Was there an injury that kept him 5'11 and 231 as well? How bout at that size a 4.71 40?

The guy was a great blitzing LB. he was mediocre in coverage, struggled off blocks. His best plays were when he was used as a blitzer, and he would never be mistaken for a classic sideline to sideline Cane LB. he also struggled tackling in space. He was a four year starter due to the pathetic depth onthe team, and as such compiled some very nice stats.

But to confuse this player with one of the greats is pure idiocy. He just wasnt that special.

one thing i had to say that i did like about spence at least in his senior season was his quick instincts, he was all over the place in the K-State, GTech, and the OSU games, however there were times when he was there for the tackle and missed it completely, the VTech game comes to mind on the 4th down play, he had an up and down career at the U, was he one of the best? compared to vilma, ray, beason, morgan, mira, no, but he was a good LB that had a good motor and great instincts, do i think he can make an impact in the NFL, yes, especially in the Pitts defense, and i hope he can get his injury in order, but its not looking good

I'm ashamed to have a similar username as this ******. Please note the difference for future reference.....no weight room blah...do u have any idea how hard it is to be 231 and 5'11" with no fat??....the guy was single handedly holding down the d for multiple seasons, all the while having no d line. Replace Rohan with him and he would've been Butkus winner on those teams. Please change your username. Thanks

Dude chill. I agree that Spence should not be considered among the Best ever at LB, but no need to disparage the kid either.
The way I look it at is like this Pound for Pound he was one of the best. Now we had others that were bigger and stronger then him and therefore overall "Better" but the kid maxed out his potential more than anyone.

If someone thinks Spence wasn't a Great Cane's LB, they are (respectfully) misguided. He was special on and off the field. I will always love and respect his game. Truly one of the MOST instinctual ever to wear orange and green. He was very very very special. We should all be grateful that he was ours. He was not the biggest, fastest or strongest. He was not a first round draft pick. He was not a HOF'er. HE WAS EVERYTHING ELSE to his team and this program. Lastly, he had a ton of class on and off the field. I would hope those that post in this thread try and show some too. Go Canes. A simple "thank you Sean" and "get well soon" would go a long way.

LMFAO he was nothing close to very very special Jesus Christ. These are the same people who propped up jags like Cooper and Javarris James and Fox and VT and on and on.

Morgan. Lewis. Armstead. Barrow. Vilma. Williams. These are the elite Cane LBs. Spence was t even a Beason or Darrin Smith or Nate Webster.

It's not disparaging a kid to say what he was. I didn't say he sucked. I said he was an excellent but limited LB that was in no way shape or form one of the greats. Did you people watch this program before the 2008 season?????

Should I post Manti Teo highlights? He looks awesome blitzing too. How about Jacory highlights?

No one said he wasn't productive, one of the best players on a garbage squad. But it is a disgrace to the actual Cane greats to mention him in the same category. It's embarrassing really.

Spence was 'slow, weak, and undersized?'

Wow.

I'm not sure what ELSE 5'11 231, 4.71, and 12 reps could be described as.

He was a film room freak, a great Cane, and I appreciate him. But to claim he is something he wasn't makes you sound clueless.

Again you are also inaccurate / not telling the full story with another measurable, below were his three 40 times at the combine:

I get you don't think Spence is great, but at least tell the full story...
