That was the thing that people kept glossing over as it related to D'Onofrio. In the end, Golden was going to find someone else to run his defense in a hypothetical situation that Golden would actually get rid of him.He absolutely needed to get rid of doritos, but that was his D the whole way. Wouldn't have helped much to have a better DC running the same defense with players who didn't fit.
What Golden should've done from the getgo is be honest with himself and realize he needed a defense that focused and utilized speed given the recruiting base where he was at (South Florida). Find an up and comer that had that very philosophy in mind (I mention up and comer because at the time we weren't putting money into our staff like we are now). As was mentioned, Golden valued friendships more and that's not something you do with college football; because you have to make the tough decisions.
