Coaching Need more Play action fake

Pass protection is going to be poor if your quarterback is standing in the pocket for as long as he does looking for an open receiver they need to use quick short passes and the only way to do that is to get the linebackers to react to the play action
That first drive had a bunch of quick throws and they marched right down the field

our PA tends to be RPO which when they were giving cushion or bailed we threw a hitch but they neutralized it with press. The bubbles never work well except to George idk why he isn’t the target or maybe arroyo.

We definitely do run traditional PA though it just is simpler/faster when in shotgun vs pistol or under center

I’d have to rewatch but felt like we tried PA a few times and it was blown up so fast we scrapped it

Hard to use it when defense is blitzing to stop the pass first.

OP's point is still valid moving forward, though. If teams go back to selling out to stop the run like earlier in the season, we need A heavy dose of pa and rpo ready to go.

Need to get more blitz beaters ready too. FSU showed the only blueprint for slowing is down and we still got 36.

There’s a play where we have a WR motion in for a block on the edge (Restrepo typically)…it’s ran 2-3 times a game.

Whenever I see the motion it’s been a handoff 100% of the time. It’s been recognized that way on film and the D has been selling out immediately on the motion.

Wrinkling in a PA with someone leaking out would be a big play and something the D would have to respect and not sell out on the motion. I would love to see this, especially in a big game (Clemson) if we get there.

Yeah totally agree

It’s going to be very effective for us. Felt like Dawson wanted to do it but just couldn’t make it happen

RB screens would help also.. I dont think we have run a legit rb screen all year..

Ran one to Johnson and it was wide open but arroyo didn’t block anyone. He makes one block and Johnson likely takes that screen to the house last night

The execution on that play was off, that was supposed to be a mesh type play with rb thru the oline and create ALOT of trash for a man defender (LB) to get thru.. Seems like Arroyo maybe wasnt on same page because he was in vicinity and he brought his defender to the play and h made tackle..

Let me find breakdown of play to show how its supposed to be run as concept

What we ran was a concept alot of NFL OCs like to run in redzone.. I would have to watch the play again but for some reason we had some running route in same vicinity as Johnson which in man coverage brings their man too, which is who I think made tackle (is someone can get me a time stamp on full game copy I could verify) I think our execution was off..

Also we ran it the same way 9ers run it with McCaffery by sending him in shuffle motion one way then trying to bring him back across oline the other way..

clips below:

Run game still isn’t fully married to the pass game. Good thing right now is that we can do both well separately so we can have a good offense either way.

The first drive we saw a glimpse of what it could look like with the rpo hitches but fsu adjusted to that. There was also a play that we did that TE motion we always do with arroyo but instead of the usual edge block for a run but instead we ran a play action and had him wide open in the flat

You have to pass protect to run play action.

FSU’s defensive line is stat chasing. They know they’re going to lose but they don’t care if they can rack up a sack or two. They made no attempt to stop the run. Trying to play fake a defense that’s not interested in stopping the run is stupid.

Its not just about this game , its been a thing since last year. We had a 23% play action usage last year and so far this year not including fsu its at 25%

Even better. We got the flea flicker.
We ran the flea flicker and then threw to a 10 yard route. I'm sure that play was intended for one of the receivers running a deep route, but FSU's secondary didn't bite. Credit to Cam for taking what was there and not trying to force it into double coverage. Maybe we see that play again and our other options are available.
