National Championship - ND v OSU*

whos to say JS still doesn't go there I am sure they paid more, but the cope is we matched. I seriously doubt it. No one is choosing where they get less
I think if the money was the same or we offered a small amount more, JS still goes to OSU. I think that’s where he wanted to go because of track record, particularly Hartline.

Yeah I don’t think it’s true we offered more. I think he was Ohio St. all the way, he just used us to get more money from them. He knew they would always come back with the better offer .

Today sucks and it makes me hate cfb (with all due respect given to MLK)
You're talking out of your ***.

The insiders here including D$ have said we offered MORE for both Innis and JSmith but they preferred to go with the sure thing for a little bit less money.

This is closer to the answer.

He was locked in with OSU for some time. If it wasn't OSU we likely had a shot more so than any other colleges.

But OSU had the hooves in for some yearrssss. He got the extra bread needed.

$5M? You know he’s literally not able to be drafted for 2 years right? He has LITERALLY zero way of making >$100k/yr other than CFB for the next 2 seasons. $5M would make him probably by far the highest paid player in all of CFB and likely at least 3-4X higher than the next highest paid Non-Qb…. Lol
Ahhh yes. I am aware.

Kid is literally the reason OSU made it to that game and is a future 1st pick. Would be the 1 or 2 pick this year.

After what he did this year, if he decided to enter the portal and field offers.. that number would shot thru the roof

This position head coach is a **** excuse.
Plenty of elite receivers have made it to the league without Hartline.
Plenty of dt’s have made the league and not gone to osu.
The same way bama with Saban acted like every **** commit was a first round draft pick.

Nobody has nfl fairy dust that they sprinkle on and it makes you a draft pick.

I always say never make a decision where money is the only reason you make a decision.

But in my situation it’s sometimes just a little bit more or a bs sign on bonus.

But the question has to arise “well exactly how much more were we really gonna pay”?

The issue is that we really don’t know what was offered to J Smith from UM’s side.

But we also don’t know what kind of pull hartline has with whoever is paying J Smith.

Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way. Maybe osu just has a pitch man with more credibility.
Did Hartline go to osu and say “this guy is literally a game changer. Better than Harrison and Olave right now and it ain’t even close. If we don’t get him we will regret it for years. It will basically hurt sofla recruiting. Whatever we pay it him will pay for itself easily”

Now considering Hartline’s record of coaching first rounders then the admin will believe him and he wasn’t lying.

Now did Beard say the same thing to Christobal and the nil people?
Does Beard have the same pull at UM that Hartline has at osu?
Did Beard even make such a claim? Does beard have the same eye for evaluation as Hartline? Has he seen multiple first rounders first hand and know what they look like as sophomores in high school?
The rumor was that J Smith was the most that osu has ever spent on a recruit.
NIL or not that’s a bold and expensive asz statement considering who’s been through their ranks the past few years both in hs and portal.

Now imagine bringing up a number like that compared to what has been paid to our players.
The boosters would be like “I’m sorry how much money for a dude that hasn’t played one snap”
Ward was a different story because he had 3 years of solid production at multiple stops and even in p4. You see the reason you’re paying.
But Hartline has the trust of their boosters. Does Beard have the same with ours? Were they gonna ok paying more for a freshman wr than a qb who was gonna get drafted?

I’m not saying we didn’t offer more than osu. But I seriously doubt it was “a lot more”.

Look at it from the outside. We had to overspend and overspend by alot to beat them. Anyone not knowing that was crazy.

We had no QB on signing day and they were a perennial 10 win team with playoff appearances and multiple first round receivers. You weren’t just gonna offer a first class upgrade and expect a commitment.

They went all in, we went all in - ish... did not get it done on the defensive side of the roster.
Even with osu really going all in. They’re also the poster child for the beauty contest that is the cfp. They lost that Michigan game at home knowing they’d be still in. So let’s not act like they spent all that money and went unbeaten. It just feels further away cause they got a second chance and took full advantage

I feel badly for you, @ST26, @Tony4Canes and @CanefaninBuckeyeland amongst others who live in Ohio and have to live with this.
I hate the Gators but I respect that I truly don’t understand the gravity of deep rooted hate yall have for the Gators and I’m aware that it’s because I’m not a Floridian. Well it’s the same with the Buckeyes, yall can’t possibly understand the just how deeply we despise them.

Especially…especially being from Cleveland where I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and no one up here was this die-hard Buckeye fan like the whole city is now. And it’s cult like and fake. Imagine asking how about those Buckeyes being the small talk and people wearing the apparel, when that was never the case even just 20 years ago. You can go to Columbus right now and not find any Browns, Cavs or Indians apparel. But you won’t find a sports themed store in Cleveland that doesn’t carry all things Buckeyes now. Cleveland is a way older city than Columbus but we are following them, out of thirst for a winner. It’s desperation and embarrassing.

Imagine that the Hurricanes didn’t exist and the whole Miami were solely die-hard Dolphins fans. But for years the Dolphins broke your hearts in devastating losses, despite unmatched city loyalty. Then a team from up north called the Gaytors came to prominence, recruited a few kids from the inner city of Miami and the whole Miami became Gaytor fans. Imagine Miami becoming a Gaytor city. And Gainesville not even really effing with Miami all like that.

So you’re basically saying that it took more convincing in his hometown to convince the collective that he was a generational talent? I don’t buy that! Hartline’s track record I’ll buy Cam having not signed yet I’ll buy. But beard needing to convince Mario? He was gonna be this talent, no matter where he went. Ohio State was just more prepared for what came along with his status. And cam is better than Howard.

Agreed, mario basically admitted it when he took blame for the secondary issues. People here said we couldn’t blame the staff for being complacent in the portal

It basically put a cap on our ceiling before the season started, #1 offense by far and still couldn’t overcome it.

Look man, it’s not as controversial as you’re making it out.
It’s just simple sticker shock to the people cutting the checks here at um compare to the people at osu.
It’s one thing to say you want a seat at the table and then seeing the check when the bill comes for that wine bottle you bought with the rib eyes. If you’ve been there before you don’t look at the check and just drop the card.

But I guarantee you that osu has bought that dinner way more times in the last 10 years than anyone at UM has.
IDK the intricacies that involved signing Ward. But it didn’t look like we presented the deal strong enough to convince him before signing day. And it looks like that sht cost us some receivers.

Yes I know all this is hindsight but it’s all we have. It’s not an attack on beard. I think he’s a great hire. But maybe the people funding our nil just haven’t adjusted to what it’s actually gonna take to build and retain a championship caliber roster.
