In the light of the newest Kevin Olsen f*** up, I've decided to delve into what has been a somewhat confusing career for QB Jake Heaps.

In this I've examined positives and negatives and have seen some interesting things from our presumable starter.

I'm going to try to shed some light on this and i've inserted several X factors into his career. Please be advised i'm not making ANY excuses for him but there are some things to consider.

Thanks for the read.

1.) Measurables- I have yet to look at his HS highlight tape and i'm not going. as a RS senior who has started at 2 Division 1 programs, That at this point is irrelevant. what I will make a note of is his height. When I first heard of his accepted transfer I said "cool. this means nothing to me." (I didn't see him starting at all! Now it's pretty much guaranteed at this point) When he finally was placed on the website I was a little bit concerned.

Heaps UM Profile here: http://bit.ly/1sfRJpX

at 6'1" 210 I find him really short for his position. Now, considering the fact that there's been a recent trend of 6 foot signal callers making noise in the NCAA and NFL as of late, this should be naturally welcomed right?

Well the kicker here is that they're ATHLETIC. Russell Wilson can escape the pocket and rip it down field. Or he can tuck it and take off. And Manziel? Well he's Manziel. We're not gonna see someone like him in college football again for awhile. This isn't the case so much for our man Heaps. I didn't go in depth of the average heights of personnel on his 2 offensive lines at BYU and Kansas, but considering the norm it's safe to assume that his front five was not all 5'11". Will he struggle to see over the line in this system at Miami? Will it affect his ability to evade the likes of FSU and Nebraska on their D lines? Only time will tell.

Mentioning Wilson and Manziel ties into my next point which is:
2.)Athleticism- Jake isn't Manziel fast. He's not Wilson fast. He may not even be Jacory or Bad Ankle Stephen Morris fast. this is CLEARLY empasized by his rushing totals from JUST last season.

In 11 games of action last season, TWICE did he have positive rushing yards.

Jake Heaps ESPN Statistics page here: http://es.pn/1sdJA4B

As you can see from the link he had a grand total of 12 positive rushing yards.
7 against Louisiana Tech and 5 against Iowa state.

To me this screams traditional pocket passer. the questions I now pose is how effective was his actual pocket? How much time did he have in the good and bad pockets, and how good were the recievers around him?

This ties into my next point which is

3.)Talent- His running mate in the back field with him in James Sims has been an EXTREMELY serviceable team mate for his 4 seasons at Kansas.

James Sims

Originally rated a 3 star, James listed as the 50th best player in the state and not even rated as a RB nationally. Yet he's managed to amass over 1,000 yards the past 2 seasons with the Jayhawks. The only person to do that in school history.

Jimmay Mundine

Jimmay Mundine Rivals Page: http://bit.ly/1u9WWPD

Also a 3 star recruited originally at OLB Mundine was impressive as a Tight end last year for the Jayhawks. Mundine had his best season as a junior with 20 receptions for 229 yards. averaging 11.5 yards a catch and 5 touchdowns. It must be noted that Heaps was not the QB for all these statistics but did manage to throw TDs to Mundine.

O-Line

To be completely honest, the line Heaps sat behind for his time at Kansas was nothing to be excited about. i\In fact they allowed 30 sacks for 227 yards last season alone raking them 95th in the FBS as compared to Miami who were ranked 27th and allowed a little more than half of that in 17 total sacks for 147 yards.

To put that in perspective at Kansas a QB was sacked an avaerage of 2.5 times a game. WOW!

Reciever Corps

The reciever corps was horrendous in comparison to Miami's. The leading reciever was Tony Pierson who had 24 snags for 333 yards and 1 TD. The recieving corps as a whole managed 1685 receiving yards and 9 scores to put THAT into perspective, Allen Hurns had 1100 yards and 6 scores BY HIMSELF. In fact he had as many catches and TDs as 3 of their top 5 recievers combined. You might be thinking "big deal, Hurns is whipping a depth charts *** in Jacksonville". Ok, well here's this. Stacy Coley had more recieving yards as a TRUE FRESHMAN as their leading reciever did as a senior as a matter of fact, coley almost has the same yardage as Pierson has in 4 seasons in one.

Honest Assessment

Heaps dealt with a heap (see what I did there?) of adversity in his career and for someone who was so good in HS I can honestly say the talent surrounding him hasn't matched up. At Miami, it now does. If Heaps has all the talent he did to take him to 3 D-1 programs he will GO OFF at Miami. his TD/Int ratio last season was 8-10 and ALOT of those were deflected passes from his sub par recieving corps.

With the talent that we've surrounded him with, his IQ and the fact he's played college football he can possibly mess around and put up video game numbers if he avoids the mental mistakes.

CONCLUSION:

Heaps is going to turn heads and drop jaws if the line blocks and the receiving corps catches. period. He is in position to be in some draft and award convos by mid-season.

Enjoy this year canes fans

Go Canes!!

Bro that's what is being said could have sworn I read it on rivals.

Bro, rivals isn't credible, bro.

Who is credible anymore, Adam Kuperstein? Not saying rivals has it right, but this is a private institute. That doesn't have to release any info and if memory serves me correct. They don't release info on why said players get suspended. Our when said violation even happened.

Just last week Golden was talking about Olsen competing for the starting spot. That wouldn't make much sense if they already knew about the suspension. Also if it's true Olsen was missing from the photoshoot then it's likely something happened this week.

Nice write up, not.

He didn't play at Kansas for 4 years. Your research was subpar and everything you said could be gather from 2-3 articles that mention Heaps and him coming to Miami.

What you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Admittedly, I want the kid - who did not cut it at BYU and who the coaches at Kansas decided to change their system away from his skill set - to blow up at UM, but I'm not drinking the Kool Aid. We'll know what he is pretty early in Fall camp.

Been waiting for a month for your honest to God assessment of Heaps. I didn't much care for your earlier "My Slightly Skewed & Disingenuous Assessment of Jake Heaps".

After reading that hard hitting analysis, I'm going synopsize it for our less patient readers. Heaps is short and not all that athletic, but I really hope he does better at UM because be has better talent around him.
