Excited to see how Richt and staff organizes this for our guys. Will probably hear the reoccurring theme of "Wow, this is way better than it was under Al Golden"
I have the opposite fear/expectation...I'm usually glass-half-full kind-of-guy, but AG left the cupboard rather bare, other than Artier Burns we won't have a lot of talent in this draft. I think our Pro Day might be rather underwhelming...unfortunately.
Now next year it should be amazing.
It hurts to admit it but you are probably right. But this event was once bigger than the Nike football camp. Unlike any other University in the country, Miami was the only school that could host a Pro Day that would bring every NFL team in the league. That's huge and I think the streak ended a few years ago. The U actually had to turn down requests from players of other university's (FSU) who wanted to participate in Miami's Pro Day because it provided the most exposure. That's huge and we have to get back to that and find a way to market that for recruiting.
Yeah, I was a big Golden defender for a long time but I was wrong. The reality of it is that the program eroded SO MUCH under his stewardship.
And what we're seeing now has me so excited and it's so refreshingly surprising. I didn't think Richt wouldn't be able to turn it around, but there is no way I saw this much excitement, this much promise, a 9-10 win season is eminently possible this season - we had no right, with how far Golden let thing fall, to expect what Richt is accomplishing.
So pumped!
You know, I think we have failed as fans, media and administrators to put the pressure on the AD to put a system in place that properly measures the coaching staffs success with recruiting and development of players. We do an excellent job on the front end of coverage of Nike Camps and providing leads on potential recruits that we think the coaches should take a look at. But on the back end, I think the combines and pro days are great places to get a critically objective and an unbiased reading on the talent level and development of our program. I think this key part has been missing from the Administrations annual review process for so long that it has allowed what you described above to drop to such levels. If it is implemented, I think the AD can either find ways to get the Head Coach what he needs to be successful early in the downward trend or replace him if needed, rather than wait until its blatantly obvious that he needs to go.
That is all fine and good, but frankly, I don't give a **** about any of that and neither should the administration. The sole criterion for success of any coaching staff is their success with their players at the college level. I would trade the pro success of every last one of the miami alum over the last 15 years for more success at the college level without hesitation. Teams with far less nfl talent and far less impressive pro days have embarrassed miami of late, that is what matters, and that is all that should matter.
