****Miami vs. Drake GAME THREAD****

Cut the ******* Kidd minutes in half. Play 5 out. Shoot 3s, you have a bunch of dudes that can shoot it just play into it. No reason Johnson should finish a game with 4 shots.

this was embarassing...but hey i took Drake 1.5 middle of the first quarter.

This team wont be doing much this year they look soft just like last year and last year Omier was a tough son of a gun...Only Johnson looks like he has it...everybody else is pepper mint patty

Maybe this is the year we scale up instead of starting well in November and getting **** punched? It could happen… 😬

We looked like ***. If we don’t hit jump shots we are so ****ed on offense. Defense…optional

Game thoughts:
-it was never close. We lost to essentially a div 2 school picked 5th in the MVC
-the officiating was terrible. No way do the refs call a UNC game like that
-we look like last year’s team. Guys freelancing, not hustling, pointing fingers, playing without chemistry
-Slashers? Nope
-Kidd looks like an ACC liability at the 5
-Matt and Pack are clones from last season
-Jalen didn’t impress
-Jalil? MIA
-Djobet? Nope
-Staton-McCray is probably our best player
-L is going to have to put it together fast or risk becoming irrelevant
Not sure how you come out of that game thinking AS-M is our best player

Far and beyond Brandon Johnson.

It all starts with defense and rebounding.... we are not going to shoot our way through the ACC...

Coach L has an uphill task with this team...

They just got embarrassed to a D2 team. Then you have to play Arkansas Tennessee and then ACC teams. But yea let’s be positive….
We have no idea how good Drake is. I’m not saying it’s rainbows and sunshine but again, it’s one game. I’m sure there were no meltdowns over the losses our 2013 , 2016, 2022, and 2023 teams had.

What I found interesting was normally when a mid major takes down a decent P5 it’s because they have perfected a specific style of play and beat them playing there game.

Not only was drake better both offensively and defensively, they also dominated the glass and were better when the game was fast paced and when the game slowed down.

2013 team lost to FGCU by 12. 2016 team lost to Northeastern at home. 2022 lost to UCF and was blown out by Dayton. People melted down.

We did a poor job of not switching on defense. It’s very hard to play man to man defense against a team that sets so many screens without switching on defense. There is no excuse for not being prepared for this. And for not adjusting during the game.
Even on the 8th grade school and AAU teams I coach we discuss how are we defending screens, and that changes from game to game depending on why that opponent screens. Is it to get to the rim (trap or hedge and recover) or is it to get open 3’s (switch).
I know it’s harder at this level but the principles are the same and we did not do it today.

On offense we need someone who can break down the defense. Pack is a great shooter, as is my nephew, but neither are the type to break down a defense with the dribble and create open looks for teammates. We need one of the young guys to be that. And then I would run a 3 guard offense. Yes a bigger team can expose us on defense but this UM team needs to outscore opponents.

I don’t want to pick out any individual player after this game because I think Coach L did not put the players in a position to win. That does not mean I am happy with the individual contributions. But if the scheme is wrong it is hard to beat a well coached team regardless of talent. See Kentucky under Calipari.

This is what I just can not understand with the fanbase. We watched a team with Jordan Miller, who is a shooting guard in the NBA, play the 4 spot and go to the E8 and F4 and yet people were so worried about size that they talked themselves into a guy that can’t move, can’t shoot, can’t rebound, can’t defend, just because he’s tall, while teams can sag off him on ball screens and clog up the lane for our smaller guards.

We have the guys to outscore teams by playing the numbers game from 3. Nothing is wrong with that, I don’t know why people are so opposed to it.
