Young crowd. Walsh literally went two years without a loss (Fvck that sniveling weasel Lou Holtz and his store bought mixed crew).

Reason I put him over Ward was the stark difference in competition. 1988 was probably the toughest schedule in UM history whereas last year was one of the easiest.
Walsh played 12 Top 20 teams in two years and 5 Top 6 teams.
If not for an inconceivably inept officiating crew and JJ’s stubbornness to not just kick the extra point and get a guaranteed rematch with ND for the NC, he would have been perfect for two years and against a schedule that would make an SEC team cry.

No disrespect to Walsh, he was before my time so I only watched highlights and old VHS tapes from him. However, Cam has the arm and decision making to make it on team at any time in history.

Good point. Although, I'd say I need to see more than one half of play to make that determination. Plus, as great as Iowa State's pass defense was, they only played 4 teams in the top 30 of offenses last year - Miami (#1), Texas Tech, (#4), Baylor (#19), and Arizona State (#30). The other 10 teams they played were #46 or worse in college football with 2 of them over #100 in pass offense ranking.
man cut it out. The guy can play anywhere vs anybody

I hear you and trust me, I’m as big a Cam Ward fan as anyone, but it’s difficult to compare QB’s from different era’s.
Ward had a lot more weapons this year than Walsh had in 1988.

How good would Jim Kelly have been in college if he was born a couple years later?

How good would Kosar have been if he hadn’t, similar to Ward, been saddled with Olivadotti’s garbage defenses or if he had played his last two years of college eligibility instead of becoming the youngest QB to ever start an NFL playoff game and then the next year the youngest QB to start in an NFL conference championship game?

How good would Walsh have been if he played his senior year?

Ward was considered, allegedly, a 4th round pick had he gone in the draft after his junior year. Kosar and Walsh were 1st and 2nd overall picks in the supplemental draft after their redshirt sophomore and junior years. Minnesota and Cleveland both traded their #1 overall picks to try and get Kosar and Dallas gave up a #1 pick to get Walsh.

I’ve watched every QB at UM since Jim Kelly. If it’s 4th and goal from the 5 with 1:00 left in the NC, the following would be my order of preference:

Walsh
Kosar
Ward
Dorsey
Kelly
Erickson
Torretta
Testaverde (I’m sure this will get me flak but Vinny and JJ lost the 86 NC all by themselves, when the rest of the team played their hearts out)

Berlin (deserves a spot at the table for beating a Top 10 FSU team not once, but twice, in the same season and a ranked UF.

I picked Walsh also. You explained it so well, I don't have to, and could not have as well you. Thank you. Us 50'ish yr olds (at least that) know the deal.

This is tough. I’m going Cam and not due to recency bias….here’s my explanation:

2001 Dorsey vs BC….does Cam escape with a W (I vote no)
2024 Cam vs Cal….does Dorsey comeback (I vote no)

2024 Cam vs GT….this is the game where it gets interesting….does Dorsey get it done? (I say yes)

Dorsey had an all time historically great defense playing complimentary football. Cam had to be Superman every week…

If Dorsey played QB 2024 vs Cam QB 2001…..

Cam Canes win natty
Dorsey Canes 11-2 (bowl game win)

Wait a minute. I clearly remember having to work that day back in 1988. JJ could have tied that ball game by kicking an extra point earlier in the game and we would have been in the hunt for a Natty that year and a rematch with the stinking Domers? I guess I only saw the "Cleveland Gary didn't fumble" part of the ballgame.

I speaking about the last drive after the Gary fumble changed to turnover on downs by the refs. It was something like 4th and 3 from the 7 yard line. The refs spotted the ball at the one and screwed up thinking it was 4th and goal.

Walsh drove the Canes down the field and threw a TD with 45 seconds left. JJ decided to pull an Osborne and go for the 2pts to win.
If he just kicks the XP, we would have stayed at #1 and at best ND would have moved up to #2 or #3.
Holtz used the win to decline a rematch in the NC. Had it been a tie, he would have been forced to agree to rematch. Iirc the Fiesta Bowl was offering both schools big $$ for a rematch but Holtz was a sniveling weasel and decided to play WVU and we beat the dog shut out of Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
