Candidly with the portal I dont think it matters anymore. Before someone like Saban would have wanted the increase so he can hoard all the talent and keep developing players. But now? I doubt we are even at 85 and the bottom 10% of rosters likely are guys never seeing the field unless something went horribly wrong. Only 22 can be on the field so the other 70+ players not starting or getting serious time likely dip after the year

Getting 10+ high quality transfers is not happening. At some point we need to develop some of these HS recruits.

No way its going to be 8-10 portal kids. We'll lose probably that many if not more from the current roster to the 2025 winter/spring portal

Doesnt mean those team got 10+ high quality transfers. To achieve that goal we will need to be back channeling and be extremely active the first portal window.

Quality over quantity yes. But we have 1 known starter, 2 probable starters, and zero known quality depth among DBs, so I would want to see 4 adds there alone. We need two DTs assuming Mesidor leaves. We need 2 LBs and probably 1 DE. So that is 9 right there plus a QB, or 10. And we know we’re losing guys to the portal, too, so we’ll need to replace a few more.

Exactly. And don’t tell me the better programs didn’t have back channeling going on. Given Mario is a relentless recruiter. I expect the majority of the guys we want have kept in touch in some way directly or through their networks.

Nope. Obviously I would love to have 10+ portal guts who are ballers but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. Tea leaves from multiple sources at least indicate we'll be aggre$$ive but they gotta be the right type of player too and our portal hit rate hasn't been good enough.

We have to “back channel” effectively like every other big time program does. We can’t just hope a good fit enters the portal. Not saying we don’t do anything but seems like we are behind on this compared to other programs.

From what I gathered hearing we were ready to be aggressive in portal hopefully meant just what you said. We need the majority of guys finalized in the first window.
