Anyone notice this? I'll have to go back and double check but I tracked our DL rotation in the pivotal 3rd quarter and I didn't see either one of those guys in there the 3rd. If they were, they were in there towards the very end of the quarter.

Mind boggling defensive line rotation considering they played quite a bit in the first half.

FSU neutralized McCord by chipping him with O'Leary and Freeman. AQM looked like a chicken with its head sawed off.

Anything is better than Shayon Green and Pierre rushing from the outside. Actually, anything is better than our current defensive philosophy of zone coverage with no pass rush. Thanks, Al.

FSU committed to running the ball in the 3rd quarter. Taking the pressure of Jamies who was clearly rattled in the first half.

If you check, there were very few third and longs in the second half. FSU pounded the ball on the ground and cant play either yet in base defense.

I know there were few 3rd and longs, but I do know that there were 2nd and longs. Why not bring them in then? The predictability of bringing them in ONLY on 3rd down was frustrating to watch.

These guys either need to grow into monsters or we need to risk having them on the field on run downs. I realize Shayon does work holding the edge, but there's a risk/reward to everything. We can't bring a personnel package in that signals exactly what we're going to do and expect a D-1 opponent to be unprepared. I asked for this before the game. I was disappointed that we didn't at least attempt a wrinkle.

Wake and FSU had plans for each of our personnel packages. I suspect VTech will as well.

Question, why not bring them in one at a time at least....maybel replace Shayon or Chick, but not both. Let McCord get reps with Shayon on the other side and AQM with Chick, or whatever combination? I mean maybe not on 2nd and 2, but middle distance on the hash or something like that.

There were zero 3rd and longs in the 3rd quarter. They had one 3rd and 1 and two 3rd and 2.

Exactly. Something new. Like Lu said, give me a wrinkle...anything!

Remember the days when we used the same DE's on 1st, 2nd and 3rd downs, and we ALWAYS pressured the QB? *sigh*

We could get sacks on any down.

Good times.

I am aware. Re-read the other post I made. I know there were multiple 2nd and longs. Point is, that was a wrinkle I felt we could get creative with.

Both QAM and McCord need at least another 15 pounds to play on first and second down. We're a flawed team so bringing in personnel packages is where we're at right now.

A wrinkle with what? They were running the ball effectively and it made play action easy. They had 3 second and longs and they did a quick out to Shaw then we had two blown coverages to O'Leary and to Shaw. Highsmith was out of position on the one to Shaw.

It's time to take the training wheels off these 2 and unleash them.

I have almost no doubt AQM will be a complete beast with more experience. McCord desperately needs an inside move. Enough film on him now to scout and teams are just letting him go wide. Neither are ready to be consistent run stoppers.

I would like to see both get more looks with their hands off the ground.

I don't know, man. I thought that's what they'd do before this game. I was pretty sure we'd at least see Mccord in there for Shayon on earlier downs. Especially considering they've asked Shayon to drop in coverage and that's what they had Mccord work on in Spring.

By wrinkle I mean simply trusting Mccord in some of the spots Shayon is playing. He dropped, for example. If the offense sees Mccord in the personnel and he suddenly drops, that's at least less expected. I understand Mccord still needs to gain some weight, but he played some of these spots last year at 217. He's 240. It's more of a risk than Shayon, but it has some upside, too.

I don't know...I think Al/D want their DEs in the 280 range. I don't see McCord or AQM getting that heavy.

I think the most alarming thing about both coordinators is the predictability and inability to be creative with playcalling or scheme. Enough making things overly simplistic, every team we play knows what we are going to do, it's time to break tendencies.

In the 2nd half FSU clearly committed to running the ball. Plus they had a lot of 3rd and shorts. McCord and AQM are nothing more than situational pass rushers at this point in their careers. When a team is committed to the run game we can't afford to have them on the field.
