LOCAL PRESSURE GETTING TO THOMAS
It’s not easy being a Miami native and naming the Florida State Seminoles as your leader. 5-Star Matthew Thomas of Booker T. high school is finding that out now. About two weeks ago he told Noles247 that FSU is out in front of Alabama, USC and Miami.
“You know, I live in Miami and they support me. The people down there don’t think it’s the best decision, but they still support me,” said Thomas.
“I play down in Miami and you know a lot of the coaches down there are old school and they try to keep the ‘Canes in my head. They keep screaming Miami, they tell me that’s where it’s at, but I’m like, ‘naw’.”
Thomas says he understands the hometown love for the Miami program, but he also understands this is his decision.
“I listen to everyone and if it’s something I want to hear I take it in, but most of the time I just shrug it off.”
Florida State coach James Coley is Thomas’ primary recruiter for FSU. Coley has built a strong relationship with Thomas and is trying to close it out.
“Coach Coley was really happy I named Florida State my leader. We talked a few days after that and he was telling me a commit would be better,” said Thomas with a laugh.
“Coach (Coley) knows I like FSU a lot, they got some linebackers that will be graduating and they got a great defensive line that would be in front of me.”
The idea of committing early has crossed Thomas’ mind.
“I thought about it, but I don’t have to rush anything. I’m going to just take my time.”
Thomas doesn’t have a commitment date just yet. He says he’s waiting for “that feeling” to come. He also admitted that he will likely take visits before that happens.
“I still like Miami a little bit, Alabama, USC, Florida State is my leader, but I’m not sure yet. I need to take some visits. I might go to Alabama first, then I’m not sure where. I think I’ll probably visit FSU last.”
Thomas doesn’t have any official visit dates set yet, but he does have an unofficial visit date set on his calendar. He’ll be at the FSU/Miami matchup on October 20th in Coral Gables.
