Can UM consistently get to the quarterback from the edge? Likely. Can the Canes push the pocket and stop quarterbacks from stepping up all day? That remains to be seen.
There are no clear-cut starters anywhere along the line. If I’m guessing now (which is somewhat foolish, given several players have yet to put on pads for UM) I’d say the players with the highest snap counts will be Chickillo, Pierre, Muhammad, Kamalu, Wyche, McCord and Heurtelou, with Moten and Thomas seeing significant action. A rotation of nine or 10 quality players is exactly what Golden wants, and for once, he may have it.
This is the problem with reporters who discuss football with a fairly lazy approach. Quarterbacks "stepping up in the pocket" is not the issue at DT. Our DTs' ability to play 2-gap effectively in the run game and our calls mixing in a more attacking front are more in question.
Our "speed package" (with the most predictable stunts/loops anyone will ever see) is a problem because our opponent has already prepared for it. Will we see some changes early in games or even the season and potentially some effectiveness? I think so. Anyone who has followed this team should be more concerned with whether or not we'll have a counter prepared. The Louisville Bowl game was a perfect example. We came out ok and caught them by surprise with the S blitz. We had no more disguises. They got comfortable. The rest is history.
