Maryland vs Miami (Hall of Fame Tip-Off Naismith Classic) on ESPN at 1 pm EST

Today we got out-hustled, out-shot, out-muscled, out-jumped, and out-manned. Wong with 7 assists yesterday and guys having some touch at the basket made us look good, we DID suck today, but yeah its just one game.
I only watched the first half but it’s one game on a back to back. At worst I was hoping to finish 1-1 this weekend and they did. Maryland will be ranked for sure they are a good team and they couldn’t miss today.

What Pack did at Kansas State wasn't a fluke. He's legit. I think his struggles today are a combination of Maryland having a clear size advantage defensively at the perimeter and him trying to find his role in the offense.

Pack is most effective as a catch-and-shoot 3-pt guy so I think we need to ease him into the offense by setting up screens for him off the ball so he can get his shots in early. He doesn't mesh well when we're running stagnant half-court iso ball (which Zay excels at).
He was an off ball spot-up shooter at KState, he didn’t really play Point for them.

It’s just taking him some time to adjust to a new role in a new offense.

Yup. Earlier in the season, I was curious if he could fill Charlie Moore's facilitating role but its apparent that he's a much different player. I think that's okay though. If there's one thing this squad has, it's a bevy of reliable ball-handlers. We can afford to have Pack play primarily off the ball.

Maryland is a really good team, like one of the 5 best we’ll play this year (before the tourney), so fact is they just beat us in every facet of the game, it happens. They were a tough matchup, they’re an athletic team with very good length & depth & got hot shooting.

We definitely played bad, but in BBall sometimes the better team is just the better team.

It’s still very early, literally just 5 games in of a long season & this one game won’t define the team at all.

Overreacting to a game like this is a little over the top if you actually follow CBB.

We’ll have 2 more opportunities this month against UCF & Rutgers to show what we’re made of.

Have some things defensively that we have to go back to the drawing board & figure out, but people really need to really relax with the hyperbole this early in a Basketball season; this ain’t Football, no one goes undefeated in CBB.
Poplar trips over himself so much he’d be better off living life in a wheelchair and this man is a starter.

I hope I’m wrong but I’m skeptical.

Not shocked that the same mouthbreathers that live to be miserable would show their faces after today's performance. Maryland is a **** good team, and when you can't buy a bucket, yet your opposition can't miss, this is what happens. That said, Miami will improve and be fine as the season goes on. This isn't football, basketball teams lose, and lose frequently during the regular season. Even hyper elite teams can lose multiple games in conference games and then go on to win it all in March.

Just a little perspective. Texas Southern beat Ariz State, Houston beats Texas Southern by 30+, then Arizona State pummels Michigan. This is going to be a wild year. A lot of really good ball teams will take some serious beatings on nights they are off. So many good teams this year, you better bring it every night.

With Wooga, you take the good with the bad.

It’s just the bad often outweighs the good lol

If this was your first game watching us this season then of course you’re going to have a jaded view, but I would recommend either watching us a lot more, or just checking out until January & then you’ll have a better summation of how we look as a team.

Again it’s just game 5 of a 31/32+ game season, I think we’ll survive.

You're miserably wrong. Yes, the guy looks awkward, but his athleticism and ability to score off the dribble is a valuable skill. Just from the 5 games he's played in this season, it's obvious why L said he was one of the most improved coming into the season. Then again, making snap judgments after one loss is part and parcel of this fanbase. You'd think people would have learned from the "Charlie Moore sucks" threads, to calm down before writing people off.

Lets all hope Pack has a Charlie Moore awakening here soon. If you recall, Charlie didn't really get L's system down for a month. Looked lost out there. Need Pack to do his part. With Wong/Miller/Omier we just need everybody else to play their roles. No hero ball nonsense. Just need a couple guys to emerge and help out. I expect L got a clear picture of where we are and what we need to improve most after this weekend showing.

There are definitely some overreactions in this thread (no surprise), but there's no sugar coating how bad that performance was. That was some of the worst defensive efforts I've seen from an L team. Some thoughts:

- Anytime you give up 60% shooting, it's an atrocious defensive performance. Maryland hit some tough shots early on, but it was almost like that hurt our confidence or something because they were scoring at will for the last 3/4 of that game.
- Omier is our best offensive big man in...forever (or at least since Dwayne Collins), and he gives admirable effort on the glass, but I'm not sure how he will hold up against longer more athletic bigs in the ACC. Reese and Scott scored at will in the paint, combining for 41 points on 16/20 shooting. We just had zero answer to stop their inside game, and I'm afraid our lack of a true rim protector is going to be a big weakness again
- I hope L continues to give Aire and Casey more minutes. Walker is not good, and we need to build some frontcourt depth by ACC play. We have no other options when Omier gets into foul trouble.
- It's still too early to get too concerned about Pack, but man is he struggling right now. We need to set him some screens for open 3's to get him going because he just doesn't look comfortable at all right now.

Again, not to overreact too much to today, these early season blowouts happen and don't define a season (see Bama last year). But there are two things that have happened in every game so far that are becoming concerning trends:
1. Our lack of 3 point shooting. Another dismal outside shooting performance today, we are now at 33% on the year. Outside of Pack (who is just 8/27 from 3 so far), this team lacks natural shooters.
2. We are committing a lot of fouls, and this is unusual for an L team. 17 fouls a game is way too many

Crazy enough, really too bad Sam didn't have an 11th year, this would have been ideal team fit for his game. I really undervalued his rim protection ability.

A really good team kicked our butts for 40 minutes. We played as poorly as I could have imagined and they played about as good as I could have imagined.

I’m very impressed with that Terps team I watched today. We’re going to be alright

4-1.

He hasn’t been stellar yet all year, though it is VERY early. I’m hoping these new pieces can get square. He has way too much talent to continue to be mediocre.

Last year, I thought being the primary ball handler helped Wong be more engaged and assertive at times. That may be an option for periods when Beverly and Bensley aren’t in the game, if Pack is still struggling to adjust in a few weeks.

I was just thinking about that. I'm sure that has crossed his mind. TBH, Wong as primary ball handler worries me. Think 08 covered it in another post. Sneaky good ball handler, I just think he is out of control too often. Doesn't have PG vision. Trapped too often, picks up dribble in trouble too many times, stuff like that. Floor spaced out I like him 1 on 1 though. He has that euro step, good spin game.

If you’re cashing out on an L team in the first half of the season, let alone game 5, you’re making a mistake. The man is the polar opposite of baseball and football: his teams improve throughout the year.

I remember like it was yesterday, watching the 2013 squad lose to something called Florida Gulf Coast on a soundless feed that had worse video than a Ring camera. Heck, just last year we started 4-3 with blowout losses to Alabama and Dayton.

I don’t like the effort or execution we showed today, but I have no concern about the long term prospects of this team.

Wong is at his best when he’s the Scoring PG, the Offense should always run through him.

He can be a distributor & run the Offense helping other guys get good looks, while also taking over games when necessary with his shooting & playmaking.

Pack should be coming off double screens & setting up in the corner for his shot; run High ball screens off P&R allow for the 2 options to be either dish it to Omier in the paint off the roll or kick out to the perimeter to a squared up Pack ready to shoot from 3 & you can always have a back door cutter once the PG decides if he’s gonna hit the post or keep it himself.

There’s a lot of ways to get him his shots & get him more comfortable & in the groove, I don’t think it’s as big an issue as of now, it’s simply a matter of the team continuing to gel & figuring out what works best against certain matchups.

As long as Providence and Maryland make the NCAA tournament, then this tournament helps the tournament resume of Miami.
Miami still needs to win 20 games including 10 conference games.
Big out of conference wins are always few and far between given our non-conference scheduling.
