Mario on Joe Rose (Wake week)

First thing he talked about was alignment, assignment, being outleveraged.. Guys on here giving passes digging their head in sand will now say its true..

That **** was malpractice last week and can get coaches fired, you cant have guys who cant even set an edge on a defense play after play.. my gawd

It bothered Cristobal a bit near the end, but those are the right questions.

Obviously the “accountability” angle is falling flat since we haven’t made any major changes (personnel or scheme) since being exposed by ******* VAG TECH like 7 game ago

Which personnel changes would you like to see? We all screamed for Patterson, the guy looked like he was seeing the sport played for the first time last week. He was atrocious. I'm not trying to be a ****, I just genuinely don't know what we can do to get better. It's a failure by Mario for being this devoid of talent in Year 3 and it's an indictment on Guidry that he can't get these kids to play at least somewhat better than they are currently playing. Yes, the talent is not up to par, but it's not like there are 40 kids who belong at Kent State on that side of the ball either. Figure the **** out.

Wes, Jaden Harris, Moten and Chase Smith are the only 3rd year + home grown players who get snaps on defense.

That’s…pretty damning

I think this basically sums it all up

Backups aren’t the answer. We’ve seen that. They were clearly trying to get Popo up to speed and play over Kiko and others but then he got hurt. We cant find a safety to save our lives even though it’s our DCs “specialty”. I asked in the offseason if Patterson would be ready and Memnon did a very thorough breakdown on why he didn’t think he could because of Guidrys defense.

It’s just a **** show we are riding out. Getting guys like Alston, Brown, and Popo healthy again can help but I’m gonna be watching all of our games on defense with my eyes closed I know that much

If you had to guess my friend who do you think Mario is placing the “blame” on here
I dont think its blame per se, and we KNOW Mario doesnt like to handle anything with media so him stating what he said, that speaks volumes. I think he would tell you it starts at the top and he made it known to Guidry that something needs to be done or communicated better.

We are on outside and dont know the calls so tough to say, but I see people want to blame Baron when even when someone like Bissainthe was on edge and should be force player he didnt set the edge either. Players looking confused like a fire drill is something that shouldnt be happening passed spring of year 1. We are in year 2 week 10 looking clueless with teams still using same plays that should be contained.

It’s not one or the other.

For me it is a combination of both.

After the Damari Brown injury, they should’ve moved Richard to Nickel. After he gets injured, bring Harris down and bring in Keith Williams. He can patrol the deep middle and keeps him out of the traffic and making tackles.

Move Porter outside to boundary corner to limit his lack of athleticism. He was pretty good there last year.

Bench Powell and play Patterson more. Limit his reads and have him playing closer to the LOS.

Bring Baron off the bench and give the majority of the snaps to Mesidor. He’s a much better defender than Baron.

Give Scott, Moten, and Campbell more snaps paired with Barrow. That allows him to be more disruptive if you insist on playing a 4 man front.

Get Mauigoa off the field in obvious passing downs. Pruitt looks ready to me.

Play more zone, like Cover 3 match. Cover 2 is *** here since the deep safeties don’t have eye discipline.

Mix in the 3-3-5 more. It worked last year when we needed it. Guess what, we need it.

Everyone is different and entitled to their own opinion, of course, but for me personally, I had 4 goals and 4 goals only at the beginning of the year.

Beat the gator
Beat fsu
Win the acc
Make the playoffs

End of list. We have to figure out, somehow, to play slightly competent defense for 180 more minutes. Give the offense a chance to win games by getting off the field, or god forbid forcing a turnover. Win the next 3. If we get ramrodded by an elite offense in the playoffs, sure I’ll be ****ed, but I can handle it. That’s a fantastic season. 12-1, ACC Champions, and I get to watch them run on the field in Atlanta with the whole world tuning in. Win, lose, or draw on New Year’s Day, I’m really happy with the season and trajectory of the program. But Guidry has to figure it out 3 more times.

The thing I just can’t comprehend is how has the defense gotten this much worse in year 2 under the same DC? It looked like LG was trying to get it figured out last year with the 3-3-5 alignment but this year he just doesn’t seem to be as engaged. He can’t have forgotten how to coach defense. Just a really strange year for the defensive coaches in general.

He was also asked about backups and basically said the backups are worse..the starters earned the trust to play and most of the time it works out but sometimes it doesn't.. But those are the guys who have proven it over and over again at practice and off the field.

I don't think Mario has a problem playing younger/less experienced kids if they give us a better chance to win long term.

To me this is mostly on Guidry not making adjustments to the weaknesses of his DBs.. Mario said it but the DBs are not disciplined with their eyes and get sucked into too much motion etc and lose their assignments.

There’s your answer.

Those kids were smart, instinctual, and experienced football players. 3 of them had the athleticism to be drafted by the NFL. All of them played a TON of football. We replaced them with molasses and inexperience. There is more nuance to it, but imo the issues start right there. We lost 4 kids and the drop off has been catastrophic.

For Miami to invest the level of resources it has, to be that poor vs GaTech is completely inexcusable, and you’re 100% correct, other coaches have been fired for less.

I don’t know how it took a week 10 loss to an undermanned GaTech team for Mario to see that the defense was regressing, and missing on fundamentals

Can Ward better throw for 10 TDs these next 2 games or we are gonna be sweating out games versus garbage teams again

He clearly saw it. Doing something about it has proven harder than we all hoped.

So was it overconfidence (bad evals) of the young guys behind those 4? Or not enough portal resources placed on the back 4 of the defense?

He hasn’t forgotten how to coach, since he’s been able to make second half adjustments to turn the spigot off on the opposing offense.

What happened against GT was an abortion of epic proportions. How you can’t call a defense to secure the edges is just…I don’t know bro. I don’t have the words.

Jaden Harris is a board punching bag at the moment but he’s a good example on a macro level of this defense

Harris was solid last year. Heck at times he played well. He had a lot of reps even though we had two concrete starters

Now he looks like he’s never played football before. You don’t just “regress” like that.

we are on the same page

For me 9-1 and controlling our destiny I am happy as ****

It just is such a fly in the ointment to lose like that to Georgia Tech the way we did and to play basically our worst game as a defense this late in the season. Novembers have been awful under Mario so it’s time to sack up for sure

Two weeks to work it in, hope we take advantage of that

You guys are doing too much in depth analysis on this stuff. Its not as hard as you think to figure out..we were undefeated. Nobody was going to do anything drastic as long as we were undefeated. The defense was getting worse and worse and we did nothing because......we were undefeated. Now that we are not anymore and are playing week to week for our playoff lives..Mario has no choice now because if we dont win the ACC..he knows he has to answer for that. And it wont be pretty.

Maybe the 3-3-5 is trash this year with the dog**** DB’s….

Maybe that’s why they’ve shelved it.

probably. Even though the front 7 line up for 3-3-5 is ideal ( with Baron/Bryant as the jack 3rd LB), from what I understand, the 3-3-5 tite defense is more reliant on strong DB play than strong DL play.
