Mario Cristobal talks Syracuse loss

Mario Cristobal met with reports following a crushing 42-38 loss to Syracuse. A summary of his comments is below:

On what Syracuse did to hurt Miami: They made the contested catch about 80-90% of the time. We had a difficult time covering them. The ball was out quick. We affected the quarterback early and then didn't affect him much as the game went on.

I haven't seen the Jalen Rivers penalty. He got called for a hold and that was a really big one. So a couple penalties really hurt us. I can't tell what they called with the personal foul there at the end. But I guess it related back to, they were executing a little bit better than we were. We were trying to play some man, we played some zone. You name it. We mixed it up as much as we could, and we did not have much success. We blew a couple assignments back there, too. And then they ran the ball more effectively than we should have allowed them to.

On the decision to kick the field goal: We used analytics. It was outside the ten-yard line with four minutes to go. The call was to get the points and get a stop. We had to get a stop anyways with four minutes. If the clock was run down more, it was a heavy go.

On losing a 21-0 lead: It's really, really disappointing. And like we always tell the team, we eat it all together. There's no hiding from accountability. We accomplished a lot this season, but we wanted this one. We wanted the opportunity that this one could lead to. And we came up short. That's on all of us, starting with myself. We don'y shy away from it.

On recruiting: I don't think that ever stops. You just never let it interfere with game planning and preparing everything else. We felt really prepared coming into this game. It showed early. Then some chinks started showing up. Credit to Syracuse for putting it together.

On keeping the team focused: You reemphasize reality. This tam won 10 football games against some really good opponents. And this last game came all the way down to the wire. This team really worked hard and busted its butt to put its best foot forward.

“You reemphasize reality,” Mario Cristobal said. “This team won 10 football games against some really good opponents. This last game, it came all the way down to the wire. Our two losses are by one possession left and a touchdown. That makes us one of the better teams in the country. We can control what we can control. So, we have to wait and see, but certainly, this team has really worked hard and busted its butt to put its best foot forward.”

Truth is- as far as losses go, if UMs only loss this season was to Syracuse in the exact same way it just happened , I’d say it was a terrible matchup, defense didn’t have a prayer, and we’d have to win a shootout. Would suck but could get past it. The issue was the GT game. It was inexcusable to lose that one and it’s why we are where we are now.

Just for the record, to all those saying it takes 5 yrs to build a roster:

-A 1st yr HC took over a Syracuse team that went 41-55 under Dino Babers, including a current roster compromised of guys who went 19-30 over the past 4 yrs. Yet, somehow this 1st yr HC took said roster, & went 9-3 in yr 1 w/ a maligned QB, & came back from a 21-0 hole against a coach that some in this fan base have called elite w/ said roster.

So once again I’m going to ask the painstakingly hard ?, b/c I don’t live in a world of excuses:

How is that it takes us 5 yrs to build a championship caliber team under much better circumstances, better recruiting classes (on paper), a better roster, but other programs r doing it much quicker including DUKE!?

How is it that all of our blue chip players r underperforming, but other programs r getting at least a 50% ROI rate on theirs?

How?

Give me a break...analytics don't take the ebb and flow of the game into account. It is a TOOL, not end all be all. Our defense hadn't stopped them since the 1st quarter but magically we're going to get a stop and get the ball back. I realize if we scored a TD we still needed to stop them, but now Syracuse is playing from behind which is a major advantage to the D. Mario is a ******* idiot, period

Believe it or not - but that Jacolby George unsporting penalty cost us a chance to win this game - just cannot have it. Opposing teams know who to target and they got him to lose his self control at the perfect time.

The officials (or official) are who I say should have let that go being that the game was hanging in the balance. No punches thrown and no helmets ripped off, get in there, separate the players and move on to the next play. Not only screwed us (albeit Jacolby had a hand in it) but ALSO screwed the conference that he works for. Top 8 conference championship matchup with an opportunity to get 2 teams in from the conference SNAPPED- Now ACC pretty much guaranteed to get 1 team in because of SMU loses to 3 loss Clemson, the committee will vote a 3 loss SEC Bama/Ole Miss in over a 2 loss SMU

You just asked about a Championship caliber team. Cuse is 9-3.

Maybe you need to look at Indiana who is likely to make the CFP but not be Champion of anything.

We can also look at ATM, Michigan, Bama for teams that had much better rosters than Miami when Mario arrived yet... those great coaches have 3+ losses and aren't looking too good for Championships.

If anything, McCord is another example of how the Portal+NIL has changed the game. Miami needs another elite QB to make another run in 2025.
