Mario Cristobal on GT loss: “You’ve gotta be a grown man and own it”

GT did the exact same thing they did last year with just a different DC. Keep everything in front of you and choose your spots to blitz. The only difference this year was TVD wasn’t throwing into the deep coverages throwing picks. But we ran the ball much better and didn’t let them control the ball quite as much. How we wasn’t prepared for this is mind boggling. They don’t have the athletes to play our skill guys so it was obvious the game plan would remain the same . They were also alllowed to grind the ball and clock . We were put in quick sand, fought like **** to get out and we know how that ends.
I agree, except it seemed their DBs held their own athletically with our WRs for the most part. I haven’t seen the all 22, and I know they kept everything in front mostly…but I saw plenty of plays live and replays where our guys were locked up. And it’s not the first team to show that.

First off I think we were decisively out coached. Our staff played right into their hands. Secondly I put this on both sides , because I expect more from the offense. We put a large amount of money in the offense so it should be held to a higher standard. They can’t have average games. The defense gets their normal blame too though.
This is the worst part IMO. It was clear very early. I kept saying to myself how the game was going virtually exactly how GT drew it up. If it goes down like that for a quarter or two, I can live with it (I guess). But the whole game? And take the L cause of it? From that team, this season? After last season?

Hard stuff to watch unfold.

If the culture has changed, this team comes off the bye improved on the fundamentals: setting the edge, tackling, communication in the secondary. Cam making the routine plays.

Also a big bye week for the coaching staff to have these guys prepared to play sound football.

Guys looking more lost on defense as the season goes on means the coaches are pressing the players instead of fixing the scheme. They don't feel comfortable out there because they're thinking too much. That's the only way this can be getting worse, if more pressure is on the players.

I'm sure we've tried to make adjustments, but we haven't noticed because we have guys like Harris, Kiko and Powell who are constantly missing tackles and getting lost in space. It's hard to notice adjustments when the dline is playing with no physicality and are getting bullied by average ACC olines
Powell and Harris are unplayable. Powell is smart but looks like a mediocre athlete and Harris is just ***

Of course this was in our heyday years - but I've seen us behind and then took the win by picking defenses apart with short - 10+ yard quick throws - and it's almost impossible in college football and sandlot football to defend what was once called - button hooks.

Just get the defenders running with you full throttle - and stop. Turn around - and you've lost your coverage. Coming back to the QB - complete pass.

Why must we insist on trying to outrun coverage when it's not been working? They want to give us the underneath - hail! Take what they give you!

Stupid, stupid, stupid.
This entire team lacks discipline which is ironic considering the tough guy get to work coach speak that's constantly coming out of Mario's pie hole. Cam is a fantastic QB and an incredibly talented guy but he has to learn to take what the defense gives him. The big plays will still come. If Cam would take all the underneath stuff defenses are giving early on, this offense would be otherworldly. Those 5, 7, 8 even 12 yard gains add up and they also get him and the offense in a rhythm. Plus when we start taking those checkdowns, the defense is going to start creeping up because we will get 1st down after 1st down. Then the big downfield passing plays will begin to open up. Then throw in a run here and there.

Dawson isn't blameless either. It's almost as if he wants to deny what our identity is and doesn't start calling the type of plays that we thrive on until we get behind. For the 1 billionth time, we are an intermittently uptempo high volume passing attack that uses the running game as a changeup. I get that we have a very good OL and a plethora of bruising RBs at our disposal. The problem is we are not at peak efficiency running that type of slow down pound it out offense. We get bogged down on drives more often when we use that approach. Later on in games where we have the lead and we want to pound the opposition into submission then yes we do that well but early in the game not so much. Maybe next year is very different but with Cam Ward we are a pass first team that finds it's rhythm through the passing game. And another thing....Stop killing drives with those ridiculous bubble screens that rarely work!

The defense is a whole other rabbit hole that I don't want to get into right now because I would be up until 6am writing.

So when's the last time a coach was blatantly called out like Booger called out Mario?
I cant argue on some of Mario's bonehead decisions and Booger was on my Bucs Super Bowl squad so I don't hate the guy but his opinion means absolute jack ****..

Boogers got to have CTE lmao his takes 99% of the time are something like this:
"Welp Joe Tess I think in this game if the offense plays well and scores more points than the others teams offense.. I think.. I think they might win the game..." Joe Tess like "👀okayy thanks Booger that's our studio update lets head back to the field" :ROFLMAO:

You think Mario is a bro clown.. Booger McFarland is the entire bro circus

Of course he’s a mediocre athlete. He’s a former walk on and in his 6th year. If you’re in school that long then you ain’t good enough for the league for a reason
I didn’t expect him look that bad tho even at Washington I feel like he looked faster haha

Wasnt he mostly a nickle tho? Different skillset to expect a walkon off a terrible defense to come carry your defense at safety.. I dont know why they made him leader of defense, this is a nightmare..
