I agree, except it seemed their DBs held their own athletically with our WRs for the most part. I haven’t seen the all 22, and I know they kept everything in front mostly…but I saw plenty of plays live and replays where our guys were locked up. And it’s not the first team to show that.GT did the exact same thing they did last year with just a different DC. Keep everything in front of you and choose your spots to blitz. The only difference this year was TVD wasn’t throwing into the deep coverages throwing picks. But we ran the ball much better and didn’t let them control the ball quite as much. How we wasn’t prepared for this is mind boggling. They don’t have the athletes to play our skill guys so it was obvious the game plan would remain the same . They were also alllowed to grind the ball and clock . We were put in quick sand, fought like **** to get out and we know how that ends.
This is the worst part IMO. It was clear very early. I kept saying to myself how the game was going virtually exactly how GT drew it up. If it goes down like that for a quarter or two, I can live with it (I guess). But the whole game? And take the L cause of it? From that team, this season? After last season?First off I think we were decisively out coached. Our staff played right into their hands. Secondly I put this on both sides , because I expect more from the offense. We put a large amount of money in the offense so it should be held to a higher standard. They can’t have average games. The defense gets their normal blame too though.
Powell and Harris are unplayable. Powell is smart but looks like a mediocre athlete and Harris is just ***I'm sure we've tried to make adjustments, but we haven't noticed because we have guys like Harris, Kiko and Powell who are constantly missing tackles and getting lost in space. It's hard to notice adjustments when the dline is playing with no physicality and are getting bullied by average ACC olines
This entire team lacks discipline which is ironic considering the tough guy get to work coach speak that's constantly coming out of Mario's pie hole. Cam is a fantastic QB and an incredibly talented guy but he has to learn to take what the defense gives him. The big plays will still come. If Cam would take all the underneath stuff defenses are giving early on, this offense would be otherworldly. Those 5, 7, 8 even 12 yard gains add up and they also get him and the offense in a rhythm. Plus when we start taking those checkdowns, the defense is going to start creeping up because we will get 1st down after 1st down. Then the big downfield passing plays will begin to open up. Then throw in a run here and there.Of course this was in our heyday years - but I've seen us behind and then took the win by picking defenses apart with short - 10+ yard quick throws - and it's almost impossible in college football and sandlot football to defend what was once called - button hooks.
Just get the defenders running with you full throttle - and stop. Turn around - and you've lost your coverage. Coming back to the QB - complete pass.
Why must we insist on trying to outrun coverage when it's not been working? They want to give us the underneath - hail! Take what they give you!
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
