Mario’s comment today re: recruiting

I think we can win, but it’s not some layup just because ATM lost to App St. We haven’t won a game like this in 20 years and our faithful fans are acting like we are going to stroll into Jonestown and soul snatch a team that recruits at a top 7 level
A&M has underperformed relative to their recruiting though. This isn’t going into Bama, Clemson or UGA who have sustained success for years. This thing will be an ugly dogfight but this is why you pay for a staff like this. To win these games. A&M is beatable but we can’t just roll in there expect them to lie down.

Great statistical points. I suspect the reason we have runs more plays than SMU is that we are having longer drives because of our ability to grind out first downs. And we are definitely running a lot more plays than our opponent. For anyone who doesn’t understand the significance of that fact, they should understand that App St won in large part because TAM only ran 39 offensive plays all game.

Lashlee’s offense will rack up yards and points because he has some really creative passing plays. I’d love him as a “passing game coordinator”. But that same offense had so many 3 and outs that our defense simply played too many plays for long term, consistent winning football.

But the 2 culprits last week were TVD missing on some check downs and penalties. If we played even an average offensive game last week we score 40.
If I’m not mistaken, App state had a 2:1 offensive play ratio, which is absurd, as well as the T.O.P. split. It was like 40 minutes to 19, again absurd. What aided App state I think is going for it on 4 down pretty much every time they crossed the 50.

So, how aggressive will Mario be at Kyle Field?

That’s my point. They aren’t Bama or Georgia, but they have talent, playing at home, and were just embarrassed. We are going to have to make a big leap up from what we see last week to win this game. App St had advantages that we don’t: players that match their system, no expectations to win, and they had played a P5 team the week before and almost won. We have other advantages, but we need to perform

Definitely. If we can keep the game manageable for a half, I like our chances. A&M needs this victory a lot more than we do and that could cause some errors on their part in a close game. We aren’t equipped to blow teams like this out unfortunately.

Not that this is surprising but he said that winning is a huge part of the recruiting effort. Kids want to play for winners.

That puts added pressure on us vs A&M. We haven’t showed all that much so far. Can’t afford being blown out.

Maybe we don’t have to win but we have to show up in a big way. Would hate to see damage to the ‘23 class.

I agree but I would say that it puts added pressure on A&M as well...

So 2 teams with pressure on them... I would say A&M has more than us because if they continue down this path they will lose more than 4 games this year

I posted that yesterday I think but interesting stat that we have only allowed about 50 plays a game on defense so far

Yes crappy competition but for comparisons sake Virginia ran over 80 against us

It’s so obvious that Mario used the first two game/scrimmages to establish the run, attitude, mentality/toughness, discipline and identity. How successful we were at doing that is not the point. The game/scrimmages were to break softness and do just enough passing to sustain drives and win.

Whenever Gattis felt pressed a bit, he devised a set up of plays that worked every time, even in the spring game. I’m confident and there’s nothing wrong with that. We’ll see on Saturday.

Funny thing about this is that people were complaining that our MLB lead the team with only 6 tackles.
Well when a team only runs around 50 plays the leading tackler will not have 10 tackles.

We’ll revisit this after the game on Saturday.

Every season our fanbase talks the same **** without us having a basis for it.

A$$ and Mouth is a wounded dog with a stacked roster. We always tend to get the other team’s best effort, and it’s a prime time night game at their 115,000 seat stadium. You can bet your *** that Jimbob will have them ready to play.

If we can keep it close in the first half, then we should have a shot at winning it. But nothing that this team has shown over the past few years in big games should let anyone feel confident about us not getting blown out.
The biggest difference between this year and years past is this coaching staff.

Gattis has to open the playbook. TVD has mentioned they’ve been very vanilla just trying to find consistency and cohesiveness. Steele knows Jimblo’s O very well.

I think it’ll all come down to where it usually does - the trenches.

Lmao but but but Mario. These mfs acting like he inherited the BAMA roster. We're 2 years minimum away from having the dudes to expect winning these games.
I disagree and hopefully Mario does too. They on scholarship just like us. We have a lot of veterans some good some not so good. App state went in there and beat that ***. Blueprint ain't hard to follow.

Ask yourself what's more likely. Texas A&M expected to walk all over App ST so they took them lightly? Or. Texas A&M has roster full of 5* that are not good and Miami is the better team?

Keep in mind I didn't say we can't or won't win.

One team believed in themselves. You heard the head coach at the end of the game. They have a take on any team anywhere mindset. Mario was a part of teams who had that same mindset. If you over look your opponent and it's a close game that was on the players. They didn't make plays. If it is a blowout then it's on the coaches. We will see in 4 days and can come back to this thread.

App St has been giving every P5 team they play all they can take. A&M was 7-5 last year. They can’t take anybody lightly.

If we play like we did in the first half against Southern Miss we will lose

I cant see this being anything other than a field position defensive slugfest.

For Texas A&M, they will have to run the ball to be successful as their QB situation cancels out problem at CB2; our run defense appears to be our strength.

For UM, we may get some good sustained drives but I feel we may have trouble in the red zone.

I can see this being a 12-10 Miami win where we win without a touchdown.

I don’t get anyone being confident in us winning this game. We could win sure, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we win, but aTm could also bounce back exploiting our edge and LB’s while bottling up the run and forcing the focus on to our WRs and short passing game. I don’t know where we are really in the scheme of things. This game will say a lot.

I don’t even really need to say anything else about how I feel about the game, this encapsulates it perfectly.

Quite frankly, if an opposing OC can effectively scheme against our defensive weaknesses and exploit them, assuming they have the athletes/tools to do it, then we need to be perfect on defense to not get continuously gashed.

Because we have some major flaws on defense. And on offense, the huge question mark is can we stretch the field with the receivers that we have. So far we haven’t shown that we can.

This game is about the balls our defensive players have. They are gonna pound the ball. It will be physical. Can our guys shut their run game down? Calling on the backers to have a day or we will have issues.
