Hope he recoups well. He definitely passes the eye test as far as looking like a big time receiver in the future.

A “medical red shirt” is not an official NCAA term, but the term is used when a student-athlete is injured after participating in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year and then qualifies for a Medical Hardship Waiver.

Medical Hardship Waiver

If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify for a medical hardship:

(a) the student-athlete’s injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year in high school;

(b) the injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport and must result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and

(c) the injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests/dates of competition or 20% of the institution’s scheduled contests/dates of competition in his/her sport (whichever number is greater).

Don't know how this works with the 2 contests or 20%, but he'll be cutting it close.

I just wish they would change eligibility to 5 years and get rid of redshirting.

If he ever comes back it will be a tribute to how hard he works and how good the doctors the U has , that was easily a career ending injury . My thoughts go out to this kid and his parents .

The NCAA manual says 3 contests and 30%. They also round up the 30%, meaning that you can play in 4 games in a 12 game schedule. Lewis should get the hardship waiver with no problem. This is the same as Buchanon last year.

They changed the rule, use to be 30%. Based on the new rule, it would seem he's out of luck.

Also, the reason Ojomo didn't get a 6th year is that you need to have 2 years lost, but a voluntary redshirt does not count. Buchanon would seem to have a better shot.

What is the time table on this sort of injury? Will he be ready for the spring game?

I thought Ojomo didn't get it because of lack of documentation.

The only injury I've seen that was that severe to the ankle , was my cousin , it was almost identical , he never played again . That was 8 yrs ago though , I hope they have improved treatment .
