I don't remember if he had a medical hardship or not. Seems as if he has been injured 85% of the time. Either way, this year is a lost cause. If we can still have him here in 2014, it would make sense.
Why are you worried about DT depth in 2014?
By then
Moore, Briscoe and Ivery will be juniors
Pierre, King, Grimble will be seniors
Bostwick (IMO) and Bryant will be sophomores
The whole point is we need kids who are mature and offer quality time. Right now we have a bunch of underclassmen and NO quality. We have a lot to play for this year and it starts Thursday.
Initially, because depth is key. This year is a prime example of that. Second, because who knows how sanctions hit us, a seasoned vet could help. Third, we are assuming we will have all those kids playing. Last, because seasoned vets help those younger than them. Olivier Vernon was on Sedano today talking about how he learned from Cameron Wake how to time the snap, mix up pass rushed (can't believe he didn't know this stuff already). So there's plenty of reasons to want someone with so much promise when we should (theoretically) be ready to contend.
It would be one thing to be worried about NEXT YEAR (2013) but to find someone worried about the 2014 season, where there is so much unknown (including "CONTENDING"). It would be another thing if Porter had NO ELIGIBILITY left.
It would be funny if you redshirt him this year, he balls out next year and leaves for the draft. You know next year is his fifth season, you know a sixth season is not guaranteed.
There is no reason to redshirt him if he can offer quality time this year. He has eligibility left, we are weak at DT.
And then there is this classic play
