The truth is; new coaches always want to bring in players from previous stops to establish their culture and how they do things. Then why bring him in?
Recruiting relationships?
You’ll hear repeatedly about how a player coming in is “high character” or “hardest worker” or “sets the tone.”
This has been going on since the Dawn of time. They always get an opportunity that is probably above their talent level because they’re a known entity, and of course they do things “the right way” in the coaches mind because they already know what the coaches want.
Normally, after a while, the better players pass them and the player settles in as a good dude, hard-working player on the depth chart.
It probably doesn’t hurt that Mario wants to establish some pipeline to Polynesian players and those types to want to go to programs with other Polynesians.
