Limiting Explosives...

Yes.

Posters are setting their hair on fire as if we have given up a bunch of long bombs.

We've had some defensive busts. That's not an excuse, it's a reflection that if you don't have guys IN THE RIGHT SPOT, it doesn't matter if they can run a 4.1 40 yard dash. If your LB blitzes at the wrong time and leaves one side of the field wide open, you will give up a lot of yardage.

Most of these "explosive" plays have been SHORT plays. Most of these "explosive" plays have not involved breaking multiple tackles.

Again, that is not an excuse for saying we should have given up the yardage. But it's not like the other team did anything elaborate.
So true! Someone mentioned Jaquan Johnson. He wasn't particularly fast, but he was always in the right spot to make the play. Safety, like LB, is not so much a speed-position as it is a diagnosis, reading, or "instincts" position. We have guys that just don't diagnose the play quickly and they are frequently in the wrong spot.

Of course not saying speed doesn't help.

This is what has me worried about this being a talent/football IQ situation.
It appears that something has been exposed with our db’s.

It’s not some dude that took a go route and flew by someone. It’s short yardage plays that catch dudes out of position or biting on a fake or misdirection.
Now these plays exist for that reason. But most dudes are smart enough to have that not happen too often.
But the stats for 20+yard and 40+ yard plays are way outside the norm.
Especially at cal. it’s the only reason the game was close.

Louisiana Lightning needs to dial up more zone. Cover 2 Man under is fine to mix in but Shut will gouge explosives if we stubbornly stay in man the entire game. Ironically, this is the one QB that will play into our QB pressure rate ala Mendoza IF we can tackle in short pass / screen game -- which we have not shown the propensity to do with effect. 2 weeks to prep this ***** and bring out a true championship level defense. Should win by 10+ if we limit explosives. Clemple has also shown to be explosive and Klubnik is showing his potential as of late. We need to tighten this up.

Run the ball. Stop explosives and chunks on 1st & 2nd down. Let Cam be Cam but with a lead.
Run the ball? Sure, as a changeup but not at the expense of not getting Cam into a rhythm. We have shown over and over this season that we are much more effective when we throw on 1st down.

Hundred percent. Use the past to set up the run, not the other way around.

Also, hopefully Cam can temper his desire to play hero ball every play. Check down when it’s given. All of our RBs are capable receivers.
