A whole lot of question marks and ifs: Rico Williams, Kelvin Cain, Shayon Green, Tyriq McCord, Jelani Hamilton, Dwayne Hoilett. Who do you see stepping up to help bring pressure off the edge opposite Chick?

Edge rush?

What edge rush?

We definitely have some issues there and to pin hopes on McCord when there is a long history of freshmen wearing down is being awfully optimistic. If Green can stay healthy it would definitely help. Dude is a bull.

I am very interested to see Cain though. I didn't like him at LB but DE could definitely be a home run for him with his athleticism.

By game 6 I see McCord taking that 1 spot

Disagree. He's got a long way to go physically. He'll be situational at best.

S. Green will surprise folks if he stays healthy. He's transformed himself in the weight room and looks ready to contribute. Cain will be his primary back-up.

Would not be surprised if we use our DEs (outside of Chick) as relative 5-Techs. Offenses will either double or chip at Chickillo, and there'll be some opportunities on the other side for some blitzing. In any case, regardless of what we'll do with the DEs and the OLBs behind them in scheme, the defense will be dictated by Curtis Porter's output.

Maccord's too small to lineup at DE,it will be Green if healthy backed up by Cain,Williams,Hoilett and Hamilton.

I'm looking for Rico Williams to be a factor on 3rd downs and obvious pass rush spots. I like his first step explosiveness.

I'm with J-Hall in thinking Cain could be a wildcard as well, though he might be better rushing as a standup 3-4 LB.

We got athletes, just gotta figure out how to use them.

When I say edge rush, I'm also talking about stand up OLBs walked up to the LOS. We had Marcus Robinson stand up last season at OLB and rush the passer. I see McCord doing the same this season along with Cain.

Maybe Gabe Terry also in that role, but probably not making an impact this season.

the big IF with Green is his health. Dude gets hurt every year. Hopefully for him and the team he stays healthy this year. I think him and Cain can hold down one DE spot and have us in a pretty good place there.

overall though I think with the guys we have at DE I wouldn't mind seeing some zone blitzes this year. Athletic LBs and athletic DEs should give the DC plenty of opportunities to mix things up.

Terry

IMO he'll be able to put on weight pretty easily now that he isn't wrestling and doing track

Terry is raw. super athletic, but very raw. I don't see him making an impact this season.

Who will be the DE's when the 3-4 is being ran?

i guess the 3-4 look comes more into play when Cain in in there. just so he doesn't have to go head on against OTs every play. give the defense a little more flexibility.

so to answer the question just the regular group slightly offset. Chick and Porter essentially being the DEs with Smith as the NT.

I would expect us to struggle here. Chickillo is more of an effort pass rusher than a dominant edge guy. He tries hard and he'll rack up some sacks but it seems unlikely to me that he will terrorize people off the edge like Freeney. The other side will be someone we've never heard of and it's hard to put faith in that. I think we'll be fairly mediocre in terms of a 4 man rush and I'd expect that we'll have to blitz to get pressure. We may sacrifice the rush at times and go 5 under 3 deep if we realize that we just aren't going to get there. The best friend for these guys would be a middle push but we don't have a guy that we'd expect to give us that either.

These new guys are going to run into things they've never seen before--true athletes at 310+ lbs with long arms who can squash them straight up and have seen guys bigger and faster before. It will take time.
