We cant count (much) backwards because we took a (nearly) full class last year.

Not true, the NCAA's scholarship reductions work by putting a limit on the amount you can sign per year and then putting a cap of total scholarships, but the total scholarship cap is secondary to the cap on the amount you can sign per year. Our sanctions seem as if they are going to be pretty bad, so 10 a year seems likely, and that is why Golden says he wants to take 15, i.e., 10 less than the max of 25 counters per year. If Golden could take 15 counters this year in addition to only having 80 kids on scholarship total, we may be able to get the NCAA to take a year off of the scholarship reductions, so instead of the NCAA saying we lose 30 over 3 years, they say we lose 20 over 2. But if we sign >20 countersthis year and get some guys to leave school to make it 80 total, chances are the NCAA won't go for counting this year as an actual year of scholarship reductions. I think we will sign around 17 and keep the overall scholarship number at 75-80, and hopefully count a guy like this back to last year if possible so our counters for 2013 remain around ~15.

Sorry but I gotta disagree.
First, We cannot 'Self-impose Schollie Reductions' in anticipation of sanctions like we did a bowl ban.
Second, Whatever sanctions we may receive, if any, will not go into effect until 2014. Assume a 5 schollie reduction for 2 years. That means a max of 20 per year, instead of 25 (assuming, of course, we do not exceed the 85 limit (or whatever limit is included in upcpming sanctions.)
Therefore, if we do not sign our max number this year (2013), those EEs in winter of 2014 may be counted BACK to whatever was not used this year, and would therefore not count against the reduced 2014 number.
The reason Al is trying to limit numbers is agains the TOTAL CAP, but I suspect that that will come down drastically by attrition of non-producers transfering or not having schollie renewed.

We don't really know how big this kid is. I saw heights listed from 6'2" to 6'4". He was first team all met on a very good year for defensive players in D.C. That's according to one poster on a message board who claims to follow D.C. H.S. football. I live in the D.C. area but don't follow it very closely.

I'll believe he's in a class with Thomas when I see it. I've been watching recruiting from the mid 80's and my experience tells me that the south Florida kids seem to be a cut above. It's like when D.J. Williams came in. My early reports from fall practice were that Vilma was better than Williams when they both came in.

Back in the '80's we recruited Bukasa Kalombo from Herndon, VA. I think he was a first tream All-Met for the D.C. area and had 19 sacks his senior year. He hardly ever played at Miami.

They play pretty decent football in the D.C. area, including especially in northern Virginia, but whether this kid will be a starter at UM, we don't know yet. We were burned the last couple of years with kids we recruited from D.C. and Virginia. There was another kid from D.C. who committed and then de-committed, I think another LB. Then there was that LB from the Tidewater area of VA who spent a year or two in the program then left when Golden came in.

He's from Stafford, that's not DC area.

the tidewater kid is travis williams. my understanding is that he left the program not for a lack of talent, but could not lay off the weed. dc - year in and year out - produces a not insignificant number of good d1 players (marvin austin, stefon diggs, arrelious benn, etc...). and the tidewater region rivals just about any in terms of studs per capita (though this recruit is NOT from the tidewater region).
