LB Alex Figueroa Commits to Miami

His commitment shows that we know only a small portion of the kids that the coaches are pursuing.

you think we still take Devante Bond after this pickup? Figueroa may have taken his spot

Figueroa isn't taking anyone's spot. Bond is a different animal all together. He can provide a pass rush immediately. Figueroa is more of a project.

Similar bodies, style of play and most likely same position. The way we're recruiting its looking like we may sign up to 20. If thats the case then I suppose Bond would fit along with Figueroa. But, if we are only signing the 15-16 guys that Golden keeps mentioning, I highly doubt there is space for the two of them

He wanted to attend Fork Union to increase his academic standing and also improve test scores. But he suffered a shoulder injury in the Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star game in July. He was named the West team Defensive Most Valuable Player in that contest.

After his injury, Figueroa decided not to attend Fork Union. He instead took SAT preparatory classes. Miami remained interested in him throughout, and when the Hurricanes’ coaches offered a scholarship, Figueroa said it was an easy decision to accept immediately.

You guys put too much stock in what class he will count towards. The total number is what counts

Haven't heard his name until late since EJ has been acting up. Per Pete's thread earlier EJ's time seems to be limited. Can anyone confirm is the staff is taking Figeroua to replace EJ right away?

This is wildly speculative, irresponsible, and a massive leap to conclusion.

Not really.

Eddie Johnson hasn't exactly been earning any brownie points this year. Multiple suspensions. Kid has caused a lot of unnecessary drama this year. Golden has shown he will not hesitate to get rid of a player, for a myriad of reasons. Scholarships are limited - most of the Miami recruiting "experts" have been projecting the 2013 class with Thomas and Grace at LB. None of these fools were talking about Alex Figueroa.

Not a wild leap to assume the staff expects attrition, and not a wild leap to assume if there is an LB on the roster ripe for the door hitting him in the *** on his way out, it is Eddie Johnson.

Is he 6'2 or 6'4?

Not true, the NCAA's scholarship reductions work by putting a limit on the amount you can sign per year and then putting a cap of total scholarships, but the total scholarship cap is secondary to the cap on the amount you can sign per year. Our sanctions seem as if they are going to be pretty bad, so 10 a year seems likely, and that is why Golden says he wants to take 15, i.e., 10 less than the max of 25 counters per year. If Golden could take 15 counters this year in addition to only having 80 kids on scholarship total, we may be able to get the NCAA to take a year off of the scholarship reductions, so instead of the NCAA saying we lose 30 over 3 years, they say we lose 20 over 2. But if we sign >20 countersthis year and get some guys to leave school to make it 80 total, chances are the NCAA won't go for counting this year as an actual year of scholarship reductions. I think we will sign around 17 and keep the overall scholarship number at 75-80, and hopefully count a guy like this back to last year if possible so our counters for 2013 remain around ~15.

His special teams highlights remind me of Jordan Futch. Hopefully he's a better LB than Futch was.

IIRC, USC maxed out on EE's the year they were set to start with scholarship reductions and still had a monster class despite being sanctioned with scholarship loss.

Golden philosophy
Dynamic, versatile athletes
Develop them, find homes later

Kinda like recruiting cb to be a safety
A LB to be a DE
TE to play tackle
Oh, JJ would be proud
