Nothing like what we had this year but there were a few really good offensive teams under Golden. He had a lot of NFL players. 2013 Miami averaged 34 points per game but the defense ended the year surrendering 41,42,48,28,31 and 36 points. That was the one year they started off 7-0 and then the wheels fell off losing 4 of the last 6.Al golden never had a championship offense or QB held back by his bad defenses
Probably not the worst but potentially the DC that cost us the most in canes history
Most of his defenses only did well statistically because Al would run a slow plodding offense. This reduced defensive time on the field. The defense would play the extreme version of bend don't break where you're allowed to have anything you want under 10 yards. This resulted in long drives. The clock would run down a ton and we'd still lose, but the defense didn't give up as many yards since there weren't as many drives. Not sure I'm remembering correctly but wasn't D'onofrio consistently awful? Guidry at least has a history of decent defenses including '23 at Miami.
I actually don't think Guidry's scheme was a significant issue as much as the personnel and lack of development. The players looked lost all the time and there were so many blown coverages.D’OhNo! Did less with more talent. Guidry had less talent but failure to improve or adjust cost Miami the most. Unforgivable. Had to go
Not the worst, I agree. He wasn't bad last year and well, there's this year.
A couple of things I'll say about this year is that our secondary was probably the worst secondary we've ever had. The linebackersx they weren't the worst ever, but they're up there. The DL, something just wasn't right and there were some injuries.
All things considered, I'm not sure there is a DC in the land that makes this year's talent a top defense in the country. 7 to 10 points a game, maybe, but I do feel that people overestimated the talent we had back there.
The kill shot to me was we just couldn't ever seem to come up with key stops that let us pull away. Having an offense like we had, that typically makes a defenses job easier as they know the offense is going to score making other offenses try and keep up. That leads to them pressing, but we saw the opposite. Every team we faced by and large had a seemingly easy time of it, looked comfortable, and not under pressure.
Well deserved firing. Just not the worst ever IMHO.
I don’t think we overestimated the talent back there. The DB unit was seen as a liability in the preseason. The only person we overestimated was FM. We thought we were gold when he came back and his play regressed significantly this year. That said, a top DC would have never found himself in that position. Guidry SHOULD have seen this coming the way he tweaked the system the year before due to lack of good players.
And, as one of the top cooks, he should have been banging his hand on the table, demanding better ingredients the last couple years (especially though the portal). But from all accounts, he was not a strong recruiter and with that, I wouldnt be surprised if he wasn’t doing a ton of evaluation film work and went along with whatever ingredients were placed in front of him.
It's the worst given the context that they held back a championship caliber offense and they had a big NIL budget in an era that allows instant transfers so if you want to blame the personnel there is zero excuse for the personnel issues to be that bad.Worst DC in Canes history?
Either him or the nepo hire that led to Golden losing his job
