Lance Guidry post mortem

I’m ****ed because the writing was on the wall after the GT game. Mario should’ve dropped his nuts and at minimum removed play calling duties from him post GT, made Nicholson and JT Co-DCs during the bye week which would have gave them time to get their sh*t together. I just don’t believe we drop 2 of our last 3 if that move is made.

Rant over. 🙄

That 1984 defense was very hard to watch, particularly as the season went on.
Blew a 31-0 lead vs Maryland. And, of course, don't forget the poorly defended famous Flute TD.
That was Jimmy's first season. Inherited Schnellenberger's staff. A lot of tension, if I recall.
Nullified a great year from Kosar etc...

Oh my, just posted something similar...lol

I honestly have no idea what happened this year. We used to praise Guidry last year for halftime adjustments and patching together the 3-3-5 stack when we had so many injuries. His Marshall defenses also looked pretty sound. No idea why it looked like he forgot how to coach this year and how his area of expertise (safeties) were our weakest unit.

I never root for someone to get fired. I actually like him as a person. That being said, this was epically bad and compounded by the fact that we had a generational offense.

I think the problem on defense is more than Guidry. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Guidry lands on his feet somewhere and does well.

Had our offense not been so incredible this season, the contrast of the pizz poor defense wouldn't have stood out as much as it did this year. I am in no way defending Guidry. He had to go. The perplexing part, which others have pointed out, is that Guidry was getting praised last year for switching to the 3-3-5 and making it work. I don't know wtf he was teaching/coaching this year because in literally every game, we had massive confusion and busts all over the secondary.

I also don't get the joy that some of our fans take in the firing of our coaches. When a coach gets fired, it generally means he failed in his job, which means we suffered as a team. So i understand the frustration and anger, but taking joy in someone else's failure (on our team) doesn't really make sense to me. Except Al Golden Fvk that guy.

D’no was bad consistently with guys that would go to the league

Lance actually had a pretty decent year in 2023 and didn’t completely squander all the talent.

We’d be in the playoffs with No D

Stop.

Purgatory yourself.

Donuts was awful from Game 1 at Maryland to his last game vs WSU in the snow.

If he had any skill as a DC he would have eventually gotten other opportunities. Instead he has been out of football or a LB position coach.

Actual X’s and O’s here.

Can someone at least explain to me what Guidry was trying to do? He’s not a complete buffoon. He’s understands defense. But clearly his philosophy wasn’t getting through. So, what was his intended defense supposed to look like?

I want to point out that between 2008 and 2009, Miami went from one of its best DCs (Bill Young) to one of its worst DCs (John Lovett).

Do the research and try to prove me wrong.
2008 Miami defense (Bill Young) vs 2009 Miami defense (John Lovett)

Total defense: 57th 37th

Passing Yards 7th. 43rd

Rushing Yards. 75th. 32nd

Total Yards. 28th 29th

Yards per play. 42nd (5.0). 50th (5.2)

First Downs per game. 14.7 15.5

Def. Penalties pg. 4.8. 5.2

Turnovers caused pg 112th. 74th

2008 Miami played only one ranked team (#5 UF) but they also played Charleston Southern
2009 Miami played five ranked teams (#18 FSU, #14 GT, #11 VTech, #8 OK, #24 WISC) but they also played Florida A&M
