Interesting if true. I thought he was made for his spot and didn't see that coming. I suppose they like chick/chad more than they like Pierre/moten. I doubt Hamilton is a major factor either way.

That's why I don't listen much to the talk about Jenkins and Moten walking in as true freshmans and eating up minutes at DT.

Guys can yap all they want about those new dudes, but any coach with half a brain doesn't want to go into a season having to rely on freshmans at DT. This is probably especially true when the coaches are feeling some heat.

This. Al knows he has sh*t the bed at DT recruiting and he can't help himself with the media by trying to gloss over it. No chance any of those true frosh get any meaningful snaps at DT unless we see a rash of injuries.

No issues at building more depth at the position we are the most desperate at. Slice it how you want but there isn't much downside to this move

Agree with you, we have some solid looking kids at DE and need more quality depth inside.

Not sure what chick weighs but if it's 280, that's a bad weight for him. He's a 4-3 3/5 technique DE.

Round hole/square peg in this defense.

Would love to see Chick playing at around 265, feel like at that weight he might get some more explosive plays out of him.

I agree. There is no way that Jenkins and Moten should be jumping Huertelou and Moore. You add Kamula to the DT's rotation, and both guys should redshirt. You have inside now Pierre, Kamula, Wyche and Huertelou. Add in Moore and King, and where does Moten and Jenkins play?

You just dont redshirt guys. Pierre isnt a great player and he played bad last year so you don't just rs moten especially if pierre has another bad year.

I think jenkins is more likely to get rs than moten especially if wyche and heurtulou are as good as they think.

Moten can help with the interior pass rush on 3rd downs with kamalu and chick.

Honestly? I'd rather they RS both Jenkins and Moten unless they're absolutely killing it in practice this month (which they probably won't).

I can't recall a good/great UM team ever using a true frosh DT( quality minutes, that is) consistently, much less two. In fact, how many good tteams period do that?

Saw this coming a mile away. IIRC Kamalu was playing inside more in the bowl game. Basically he looked like they were starting to use him like they had used Chick. I knew they would be moving Kamalu and even Chick inside in a 4-3 more, as besides Pierre we really don't have much at DT, maybe Moten who is a true Frosh. King is obviously a non factor at this point, and Moore I thought was buried down the chart as a NT. Kamalu is fast and strong, and his size certainly makes him ideal as a DT. As others have said, I don't think this is any kind of radical change. It was always going to be this way. He will be a DE in the 3-4, and move inside in a 4-3.

Im not saying we are sitting pretty on the DL, but if all these guys stay healthy, I think we have some decent potential on the DL. Chick is very experienced, if he has a decent year, he will be solid at a minimum. Kamalu has gotten better and better since he's been here. I have a feeling he's going to have a great year. Pierre should also have a good year if he stays healthy. Wyche and Heurtelou should provide some solid play at NT. AQM is a year older and stronger. There is some potential there to actually have a pretty good unit.

Vince Wilfork didn't even play much his freshman year. The best NT in the NFL for a decade.its a terrible sign when true freshman are starting on the DL

Didn't Butch have to throw Damione Lewis in as a True Frosh? Also seem to recall one of the Joseph brothers, William I think, being moved to DT as a Frosh and having to play because we were thin at DT then too.

DT recruiting has been a problem for us for a long time when you really think about it. We have had some good ones over the years, but we didn't have tons of depth like other teams.

That was more because he was in terrible shape. Guys like Wilfork need a LOT of work when they first come in to really get into playing shape. They are used to just overwhelming smaller kids in HS, but have poor stamina when they first get on Campus. The DTs that play the youngest are usually guys that are leaner and stronger. In the 280-290 range, who will be 300-310 of muscle after a few seasons.

Which also doesn't bode much for Jenkins playing much. He still probably has a lot of baby fat to shed. And with Wyche, Huertlou, and maybe Moore on the rotation at NT, unless Jenkins is just killing it, I think he is probably a good candidate to RS.

Bama had frosh dt ashawn robinson who was a frosh all american last year and led the team in sacks with 7 or 8.

eddie vanderdoes started for ucla last year and montravious adams got a lot of playing time at auburn.
