Kacy Rodgers vs BC (video of a play)

That was a very DVD-like play to me.

He makes the right read, but is too indecisive as to either making a play on the ball or the man. His indecision gets him there a second too late to do either.

You can't knock Kacy for that play. He actually read the play and sniffed it out pre snap which was awesome. That was a big time throw. The BC QB put that in a small window and threaded the needle.

If that ball was high or thrown a second late than Rogers has that INT. He read that route from the jump but the QB made a big time throw to squeeze the ball in between defenders

Even if all of that was true, what about the complete whiff of a tackle? Are we supposed to give him a pass there too?

/I know, don't feed the troll, but I couldn't resist.

That play was actually very encouraging. His pre-snap read was very good. He knew that route was coming. He was just a hair short of making that play. Those are the things you want to see out of your players.

Not a knock on anyone but it takes practice to watch film. You guys missed a glaring problem which allowed that play to produce yards.

Mcghee did not read the play at all. The receiver tipped his route early into that play. Mcgee needed to cut off the inside of the field and force the receiver to the sidelines. After the snap, Mcgee took a outside release. Once he did that the play was over. Also it would have been nice for Mcgee to at least get a jam. With a Jam, Kacy Rogers is no longer a hair late but now "On time"

So if anyone blew that play it was Mcgee
are you trolling bro? Seriously that was encouraging to you? You average saftey would have at least tried to separate the receiver from the ball.
This has the be the most discouraging video I've seen of the game so far.
Making that play was all about football instincts and it's quite apparent that Rodgers hardly has any. And you can't teach instincts.
I have to believe D'onofrio and Golden see this and look for Bush or someone else quickly cause Rodgers is not the answer.

Reading the play pre-snap is very encouraging. So I am not really understanding why you feel that lacks football instincts. The mental aspect of football is more important than physical ability. They are are a lot of big, fast and aggressive players who are not good football players because they lack the mental understanding of the game.

He was a hair short of making a huge play. If that ball was thrown a little higher or slower, Kacy Rogers would have been all over that play. It is cool to get the "big Hit" but that is something that coaches do not teach. Coaches want players to make plays.

You also have to remember that this is the first time most of our players have had to be "the man". Most have been role players and never had to be the one who leads. You will have mistakes as they learn and adjust to being s full time starter. What I say in that film was very encouraging. The next time he probably makes that play.

You're confused. "Reading" a play pre-snap does not equal INSTINCTs. It just means you're knowledgeable enough to understand a play.
However once the ball is snapped and it's time to MAKE A PLAY ON THE BALL, INSTINCTS kick in.
Last year was the same thing with Rodgers vs FSU. Any Joe Schmoe Saftey would have made a play on the ball. Rodgers didn't. Last year I excused him due his his 1st time deal.. This year there is no excuse. By this stage, Junior year, if he doesn't show instincts that means the boy aint got none.
And of course coaches teach players to hit and separate a receiver from the ball. What kind of football are they teachin in your next of the woods?

I was one of the people who thought some rushed to judgement on KC after the FSU play last year, but after seeing him in extensive action he has a **** ton of work to do just to be serviceable. This is by far the worst S tandem I have seen at UM in decades.

And he's the son of an NFL coach, you would think he would have the instincts to go along with the physical attributes.
So, do you think you are not doing the same? Rushing the judgement... After all, it ´s Kacy first start and you are claiming to have seeing him in "extensive action"?!?

No I don't feel like I'm rushing to judgment, kid looks lost at times and as someone else pointed out, the game is just moving too fast for him. I would much rather see Deon Bush in there he was the better player and it wasn't close IMO.

Some of the critics need to learn the game. I dont care about criticism but I do care of criticisms that assume that the fans know more than the coaches. The corners don't touch the receivers because they arent supposed to, not because we know better than players/coaches. They are trying to show press and get to cover 3. Corners have deep third and need to get there fast not play with the receivers. That is rodgers play to make. He didnt make some great presnap read he just did what the defense asked. The next step would be to not just do what the x/o says but make a play on the receiver or ball. This is not a catastrophic error but they are going to play bush if rodgers offers nothing more than this because a responsible freshman can learn the x/o. If you dont add anything else you are replaceable.

Nice post.

Give me Jenkins. Give me Highsmith. Give me a position switch from Gunter.

Give me anything else in the 2 deep.....this kid has absolutely no instincts. I can already see the excuse machine is being broken out for this kid but I can't think of one example of a kid with this poor of instincts getting significantly better. To me, that's one of those things you're either have or you spend the rest of your short career looking for.

our starting safeties are mediocre to soft, irrespective of past legacies
Rodgers needs to learn on the job, and if he doesn't, the youngsters may takeover
Highsmith not a factor
VT needs to step it up

That´s where IMO you are rushing the judgment.

Kacy was a CB in his HS career and at the start at the U. He´s learning to play the position now. To make it worse, do you know the knock on him as a recruit? Only a cover corner and soft at run defense. It´s not coincidence coach Golden was praising him this year and saying he´s another player, much more physical. He´s a work in progress, and I will wait for more game action to form an opinion.

Also, he did some good plays against BC, too. I don´t get why some of you guys are only focusing on his mistakes, because a LOT o players did dumb mistakes in the game, but for some reason are geting the pass...

Regarding Bush, I want to see #2 on the field, too.. but at the side of Kacy and in the place of Telemaque. IMO, with the material(at safety) we have now, we will be much(??) better...

Rodgers looks pretty confident in run support. He's not afraid to mix it up and put his nose in there.

But he has shown no ability to break on the ball or make any plays in coverage. Can't have that.

Help us, Deon Bush. You're our only hope.

Brazil, I am leaning more towards your view.

Kacy is too raw at the position to he starting. Physically he looks much better than when he first got here but he isn't a safety yet.

Unfortunately for us we don't have anyone else that's really ready. I think Golden wanted to use what little experience he did have at the position on the road.

Baptism by fire. Hopefully he can stick it out and keep grinding.

Agree... typical play of a guy thinking too much.

This. If it wasn´t for the mediocre roster managment we suffered for years, a player like Kacy would have time to learn a new position.

Now, he better hurry up...

He is not a playmaker for us, a don't ***** up at best player Bicho says.

Ray Ray really let his teammates down. He would have helped us this year despite a few bad angles per game.

can we give the kid some time before we write him off? He moved to safety last year and really doesn't have much game-day experience. FSU and Duke (late game) are the only games I remember him playing in last year, aside from that strictly ST's.

And for how terrible, soft, confused, etc he is he did lead the team in tackles and made some good plays against the run and in coverage

I though KC was pretty solid in the game, I agree he had a few mishaps early but as the game progressed he got better. He did stick his nose in there for a few good tackles in run support. It is this reason I believe coach has left him starting for this week as we have a running team coming in. We shall see, I guess on Saturday at noon!

he made some plays. 3rd quarter 3 and 1 he made a stop after Olsen pierre missed the tfl. I believe kacy just needs more game experience. He had 8 solo tackles let's see how well he does in the next 3 games. Then if he's still "mediocre" let's give Deon his shot contingent on him earning it.

I also noticed after watching the game again L. Robinson had a solid game and our DL surely did not lose the LOS battle.
