Jedd Fisch takes a lot of flack for his play calling, but as I watch the game in more detail it is obvious that Stephen Morris deserves more of the blame. He misses wide open throws, he makes bad reads, and he throws into to double coverage when he has wide open receivers. Prime example is when we were 3rd and 2 and Morris throws the fade route in the end zone. He had the running back in the flat wide open that would have easily scored. Stephen Morris has to make better reads and hit open recievers. We can't always blame coaching when clearly its bad qb play

I have thought this also, Fisch calls a good game and knows how to attack a defense but our team just lacks execution. Look at the first drive, guys wide open for big plays and we get nothing. I dont know if its the time limits or teaching but I cant really use those excuses because every other college team has to deal with it.

If its not Morris spraying the ball all over the field, behind, in dirt, out of bounds with no chance to make a play, Its the wide receiver dropping it, Te looking like crap, etc. We lack real big time playmakers so you have to execute at a higher level, but it may be too much to ask of the type of talent we have on offense. Its Duke and thats it from a skill position stand point.

Fisch's job now is to get Morris to go through the progressions and think about down/distance, and the chances for being successful with the choice he makes. He probably lined up pre-snap thinking he was going to throw the fade where, with it being 3rd and 2, he should have been looking for routes with a better chance of completing the pass since he only had to get 2 yards.

A Junior QB with plenty of playing time under his belt should already understand that. I will give SM a pass on this game since he did not practice all week. However I would like to see much improvement against VT.

Morris is not a smart QB. Nothing will change that fact.

Wouldn't go so far as to say he's had plenty of time playing/starting, considering how green he was when he came in. Sure he has decent physical tools, but this is who he is, and it prolly won't change/improve until next year.

Morris did more to hurt the offense than Fisch. In fact, it's tough to judge Fisch because of how bad Morris was. There were opportunities left all over the field. I have seen some bad QB play at UM, and this may not be Kirby level...but it was bad.

Poor Lockhart is in the game because of his vertical and Morris doesn't even give him a chance

last year i thought fisch did a good job of calling plays to minimize jacorys weaknesses. Right now hes calling plays like he has Tom Brady under center. We threw almost 50 passes with a qb who hadnt practiced all week on a gimpy ankle in what was a close game.

So Fisch has a QB that can't read the defense and misses easy plays throw the ball 43 times?

Yeah, **** Fisch

It's not just the number of throws, but the timing and variety of throws that I find strange. Where Morris seems to be most effective throwing the ball is on the intermediate slants/posts, where he can step into the throw and get the receiver the ball on the run. Davon Johnson has been very effective in the slot catching these kinds of passes. Granted, his INT was on this kind of throw, but he stared the receiver down and the guy wasn't open. However, it seems like so many of our throws are of the horizontal variety (WR screens and swing passes) which usually get us minimal yards, and deep throws, which are low percentage. It seems like we go several series between seeing the intermediate throws.

In a game like this past weekend, where we had a QB that was not 100%, hadn't practiced, and was off from the start, I just don't get the offensive gameplan. While our RBs certainly didn't tear it up, they only got a combined 16 carries (9 for Duke and 7 for MJ) for 52 yds. Those guys never really had a chance to try and establish any kind of running game with low rushing attempts. I'd much rather see us in 2nd and 6 or 7 after a run on some 1st downs. It seemed like we passed on 1st down, ran on 2nd, and faced 3rd and 6+ most of the night. Morris certainly hurt us with the missed and forced throws, failure to get rid of the ball, etc., but it was pretty obvious from the start that he was not sharp.

The offense looks very similar to the New England Patriots offense minus Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowsky IMO.

I was thinking this last night. I know people will laugh but that is our model for whatever reason. We are missing the pieces but you can see it in the oline play, play selection, and development. Multiple offense.

The TE recruits we got coming in said that the coaches told them that's how they will be used. Like Aaron Hernandez and Gronk. Kinda hard to run a similar offense without a TE though.
