Just a hunch I have...

He was 4th string. For a reason. If he were better right now than any of the other three guys ahead if him he would have been playing. They were obviously hoping that they could spot him this season as a short yardage back but continuous failure in those situations killed that idea.

Fine but we need players to step up, with Duke out others will get a chance. Also, with our QB play as it is, we won't abandon the run. Before Duke was injured we ran the ball almost 40 times per game. So let's say we run it 35 times per game.

Do you think DC is going to be able to carry the ball half of that over the next 4 games? My guess is Dallas will be able to carry the ball 15-20 times per game. Those 15-20 other carries are up in the air.

Lol if Gus, at this stage, was a quality back he'd be getting touches outside of the SSU game. Not saying he won't mature into one but for now he is what he is. Serviceable.

Would like to see Mo Hagens turn into Mike Tolbert for the remainder of the season.

We proved against UNC we won't abandon the run without Duke. Our ******* 2 minute offense was almost all runs to win that game. Obviously VPI has a much better defense than UNC, but the Heels knew we were running it and we still ran it. I have no doubts we will run it 30-40 times if need be.

Didn't Gus have like 10 carries against USF? Not saying that's impressive, but its not just savannah

yeah the problem is that those runs will not be nearly as effective with Duke out.

DC has been good but Duke's 10-15 yard bursts are 5 yard gains for DC. and after DC, there is really nobody. EC i pray to god comes out of da woodwerks and can take 10-15 carries a game (something he has never done in his career)

I think 35 is the magic number. I believe we're running it about 37-38 times per game before Duke got injured. We have 4 games on 4 consecutive weeks (the 4th game on a short week), my guess is we're talking 150-160 carries over that time. That is way too many for DC to handle by himself, I think half of that is the most I would give him. Someone will need to take a bite out of those carries. Someone will need to step up.

I believe Edwards can be that guy for us.

I think that believing in Edwards right now is a Pipe dream. hope I'm wrong but we might have to just throw the ball a lot more

Sure did, for 53 yards with 5.3 ypc. Compared to DC who had 13 carries 34 yards, and 2.6 ypc.

Here is a post I made yesterday about Gus (see below). I would give him a chance because he runs fast and is big.

I would say it is unknown how good/bad he truly is...

Here are his stat lines from the only 4 games he has a carry.

FAU: 6 for 19
Savannah State: 12 for 113 3 TDs
USF: 10 for 53
UNC: 1 for 0

I believe the only carry he has with the first team offense is against UNC. IMO, how could anyone know how good this guys is based solely on the opportunities he had above.

I really want to see more Clements. I'm not nearly as big on him as others because it seems every time he gets the ball our OL blocks like maniacs. Haven't seen him do much cutting and making guys miss yet so it will be interesting.

Love Gus but I just don't think he's ready yet.....but some guys respond when its their time, and he certainly is physically capable.

You want what we don't have. No one is going to suddenly be much better today than they were yesterday because we need them to be. We're just not going to be as good a team going forward without Duke. These other guys are going to get reps, simply because they will become our only option.

This is depth and injuries catching up with a team that still is a couple of years away from having its roster back to where it needs to be.

Just don't give Gus the ball near the goaline and expect him to score

In seeing Gus Bus running, I thought he was an extremely patient runner with smooth moves, speed and tough to bring down, although against weak competition, I was not impressed with his straight ahead power as the pile and Gus went nowhere. I am a Gus believer and hope its not to early for him to shine. If the kid comes through when given the chance, it will be a big help in reaching the ACC CG.

I hope he does chise, because what we have right now. With Duke out, imo will not be able to carry the load that is going to be needed here on out.

He's a cut above the other guys physically and can bring something they can't. I could see him very easily doing what Javaris James did here as a freshmans.

Eduardo Clements is another physical back that is going to be useful but the coaches have been careful w/ his injury......

here is the rest of that article i posted this part is about Clements:

Clements, who has 126 yards on 20 carries this season after returning from offseason surgery to repair two herniated disks in his neck, wasn’t available for interviews Monday. But he posted enough entries on Twitter to reflect his intensity.

“All I Ever Wanted Was A Chance,” Clements tweeted. “I Got People That [Are] Depending On Me & I Can’t Give Up!”

And this: “Long As I Got Air In My Lungs I’m Grinding!”

Crawford called Clements “a strong downhill runner who is “always going to keep his legs moving forward” and is “great in pass protection. I don’t think there’s a blitz that can get him.”

I love EC and think he's actually a very good short yardage back because of his forward lean. I just think Gus is a more natural fluid runner who can be a more explosive element of the offense.

He's not a short yardage back. And I'm not one who takes that "he was 4th string" stuff as gospel. Damien Berry was 4th string here till everyone got hurt. When he finally got his shot, he showed everyone he was better than the other guys and never let go of the job. Edgerrin James was 2nd string behind the immortal Dyral McMillan for awhile. Do you think Dyral was the better RB? Portis was behind James Jackson. Shockey was behind Mercer. The list goes on.
