I don't follow Oregon football but I wanted to look back at the Jim Leavitt firing to Andy Avalos hired timeline in 2019. Seems similar to the drawn-out process that happened here last year... Leavitt was fired on 02/14/2019 and Avalos was hired on 02/27/2019. FWIW, Oregon's last game that year was on New Year's Eve, so took a couple months + before the Leavitt firing was official.
There are a couple of differences.
First, it was rumored that the friction between Cristobal and Leavitt got worse after the weekly game prep was over in 2018 and the off-season started in 2019. Leavitt was certainly not fired for the Oregon defense being horrible in 2018, it was not. Oregon was 48th out of 130 teams in points allowed per game. They lost an OT game to a ranked Stanford and a 6 point road game to a ranked Washington State. They did get blown out at Arizona before losing a 7-point game at Utah. Then they won the rest of their games including the bowl.
Second, note the 13 day interval between firing Leavitt and hiring Avalos. Last year at this time, people focused on the Avalos hiring date while ignoring the Leavitt firing date. Bottom line, the DC job was only open for 13 days.
Third, last year, Mario was hiring for jobs that were open due to head coaching turnover, which is a different time-frame expectation than what happens if he fires a guy or pushes a guy out of an otherwise full staff.
I didn't like all the time it took for Mario to make hires last year, and we had two guys turn-tail on us (B-Mac and T-Rob). Between not having to hire nearly an entire staff, and having Dan and Alonzo on staff for the whole process, I think that the time needed to fill jobs that become available will be a lot shorter this time around.
