I don't follow Oregon football but I wanted to look back at the Jim Leavitt firing to Andy Avalos hired timeline in 2019. Seems similar to the drawn-out process that happened here last year... Leavitt was fired on 02/14/2019 and Avalos was hired on 02/27/2019. FWIW, Oregon's last game that year was on New Year's Eve, so took a couple months + before the Leavitt firing was official.

There are a couple of differences.

First, it was rumored that the friction between Cristobal and Leavitt got worse after the weekly game prep was over in 2018 and the off-season started in 2019. Leavitt was certainly not fired for the Oregon defense being horrible in 2018, it was not. Oregon was 48th out of 130 teams in points allowed per game. They lost an OT game to a ranked Stanford and a 6 point road game to a ranked Washington State. They did get blown out at Arizona before losing a 7-point game at Utah. Then they won the rest of their games including the bowl.

Second, note the 13 day interval between firing Leavitt and hiring Avalos. Last year at this time, people focused on the Avalos hiring date while ignoring the Leavitt firing date. Bottom line, the DC job was only open for 13 days.

Third, last year, Mario was hiring for jobs that were open due to head coaching turnover, which is a different time-frame expectation than what happens if he fires a guy or pushes a guy out of an otherwise full staff.

I didn't like all the time it took for Mario to make hires last year, and we had two guys turn-tail on us (B-Mac and T-Rob). Between not having to hire nearly an entire staff, and having Dan and Alonzo on staff for the whole process, I think that the time needed to fill jobs that become available will be a lot shorter this time around.

When a person is given the opportunity to find new employment in order to save face, it's not a situation where they employer who has granted that courtesy is willing to wait indefinitely.

The Coaches Convention doesn’t start until Sunday Jan 8 and runs through the 10th. Some have mentioned that’s where the most moves are made. We’ve got a lot more waiting left.
Mario better have his 2am beer goggles on if he's hoping to land a stud at the convention.

2022:

104th in yards/play (4.8)
77th in 3rd down conversions (37.7%)
110th in yards per rush attempt (3.3)
91st in yards per pass attempt (6.7)
117th in points/play (.268)
110th in red zone % (76%)
117th in TDs/game (1.9)

Wow! Those have to be the worst offensive stats we have ever put up! Has to be.

How some of these dopes defend Mario's timeline by keeping that bum around is beyond me.

He's an absolute failure of an OC. The only thing he is good at is ****ing people off.

I don't know if that is or isnt the reason for the delay, but even people with lots of money don't like wasting it.

My biggest gripe is why not fire Gattis immediately. Even if Mario took his sweet time to replace the OC, in the interim he could have a guy like DVD designated as one of the 10 onfield and could be out recruiting

Gattis has been fuqin things up and is a liability

The only way any of this makes sense is if Mario already has an OC lined up and he gave Gattis a deadline to take a new position. If he's waiting for Gattis to get hired to start the process, or get serious, then Mario is not too bright.

I cannot, even for second, imagine a scenario where you let the guy you're going to fire dictate your timelines and hiring process.

Exactly. I said something similar a couple of days ago. The rub here is that even if Gattis leaves, it could mean his replacement is an uninspiring name like Marcus Arroyo who has been available for weeks, ergo Mario was in no rush to push Gattis out the door. If so, it's troubling that Mario would let Gattis hang around this long and potentially impact recruiting. Maybe Mario will pull a rabbit out of a hat and surprise us but at the moment I'm not very optimistic.

Out of curiosity who is the "best" OC that Mario has ever hired?
