Jethro Franklin

We missed on the most important recruit last year, DT Lavon Hooks. A ready made savage at DT that would've made a massive impact on this defense.

I still cry about that from time to time.

Gat **** he was basically signed, sealed and delivered. Calling Jethro his uncle and ****. And then...boom! Ole ****ing Miss. **** hurts dawg.

hard to compete w the ole miss money man

There is a reason Jethro only spends 1 to 2 years at all of his previous jobs in college & the NFL, then when he lastly came back to the College ranks the only that would hire was Temple. WHy would he go to lowly Temple with his west cost & NFL pedigree is the better question to ask, there where quite a few other Dline jobs open in 2010 at high profile schools Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, & Washington (who's head coach Steve Sarkisian worked with Jethro twice at USC but yet didn't offer him a job). An Mike Sherman hired franklin in Green Bay as the HC and then got the job with the Texans When Sherman become the OC & Assoc HC , did not take Jethro with him when he took the Texas A&M head Coaching position. And TAM has dline tradition as long & legendary as Miami's, heck the where nick named the wrecking defense because they where soo bad ***, but yet Sherman who was rebuilding a program from scratch did not take with him such a valuable member of the defensive staff, hmm something is a little fishy. So Franklin heads back to USC for a few months then poof like magic goes the penthouse of Troy to the loading docks of south Philly (aka Temple), with no stop in between yeah something is not right. Then also consider this Pete Carrol was supposedly very high on Franklin's coaching abilities and he had NFL experience with 3 teams so then why not take him to seattle with him when Carrol excepted the HC job. I am mean I sure it wasn't that AG & Temple made him a better offer, no I think it was his only offer.

Franklin has been living off his USC & NFL coaching stops far to long and people are starting to notice, just like with Lane Kiffin that he may not be as good as advertised. They both blessed to walk into situations at USC & in the NFL where the teams where loaded with talent so all they had to do was manage what was already gifted to them, where as when it comes to developing talent well the proof folks has been in the pudding. I have said it before and will say it again Coach Petri would eat Franklin's lunch any day of the week and twice on Sat's in the fall. An Petri has turned the **** Duke Dline into fire breathing world beater, which is just down right shameful to admit that statistically has performed head & shoulders above UM's Unit over the last 2 years.

AG know's all this now, and that's why Franklin is trying to pull one last pimp job living off of the USC, NFL, and now the Miami name to land a job elsewhere which is why Jethro interviewed for the OU Dline job privately just after signing day 2013. AG was surprised by the question during an interview because he didn't even Franklin was looking but he knows the writing is on the wall and in the sky, as well as the Tea Leaves.

So lets see how this plays out but I don't see Franklin lasting past the fall, maybe even sooner if he can land a job somewhere else thus opening the door for the return of Kevin Patrick. I would say AG needs encourage Jethro to do this sooner in order to give KP the time to hit the ground running with some of the UM dline recruiting targets.

Go Canes!

Good post, Paranos. You pointed out nuggets on Franklin I didn't know anything about.

So, you like Kevin Patrick? Anyone else?

There were rumors that he was going to be out last year. I have honestly heard ridiculous stories of what he does on recruiting in-homes. The DL has been pathetic since he has been here. DL recruiting has been atrocious outside of a few highly touted DEs we got. Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of any of our Defensive coaches besides MB

+ Paul Williams imo

Wasn't it the grades that got in the way?

Paul Williams gets the job done, and gets the least credit on the staff

Wait wait wait. Not saying i disagree...but why does Paul Williams get a pass? Our secondary looks absolutely lost sometimes. They're starting to look a little better this spring with the emergence of Howard, Crawford, Bush and Jenkins...but go figure. All those guys are studs.

Franklin is not working with those type of athletes on the DL.

And Barrow is the worst coach on the entire staff. He was retained for reasons other than his coaching ability. Can't believe anybody thinks HE is ok but the rest of the defensive coaches are in question.

The defensive staff is a disaster.

Goldens
Dorito
Franklins
Williams
Barrow

Nobody is banging down the door trying to poach any of these guys.

U said it all right there. Williams has brought in studs to bolster our secondary. Should he not get credited for bringing them in and/or coaching them up?

Serious question - at what point in the process do our staff members stop recruiting by geographical area and start recruiting by position?

Williams is a really good coach. WTF are you talking about?

Again...not saying i disagree...

But based on what?

Based on player improvement/development. McGee last year. Bush and Jenkins throughout the year. Gunter's play.

Now we don't have a large sample size, but players have generally improved under his coaching as opposed to regressing. We'll see where these freshmen are in two years and if he's really the good coach that I think he is.

Calling Paul Williams a "really good" coach is a stretch..... i think that's still to be determined.
