Jethro Franklin

I remember him when he was with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His DL was terrible and his players disliked him. I knew as soon as Franklin was hired that our DL would be crap here.

Here's the thing. Franklin has been around. You are talking about a coach with a VERY deep resume. He's coached in the league, and at other top programs. He's had some successes, and he ALSO happens to be one of our BEST recruiters.

Its hard to judge the guy with the absolute garbage we had to work with on the DL this year. Had he had Porter healthy all year, and Forston had come back, we could have had a rotation of Porter, Forston, Smith and Pierre with Luther Robinson rotating in also. That, while not an all star cast, would have been at least servicable line with some depth. Instead, we got a trainwreck with Porter hurt most of the year, Forston leaving early, Smith is way too out of shape to play more than 15-20 snaps a game, and Pierre is still very young.

The one thing that concerns me about Franklin is WHY is he here? Why did he go from programs like USC, and the NFL, to Temple, and now here? If he was all that, looks like he was on a downward spiral career wise. So that concerns me. But as far as the DL goes, I think you need to give him another year and see what he can do. You really cant do much with a bunch of 18 year old kids, some of who weight 215-220 soaking wet playing DE, Freshmen DTs, etc. That is a recipie for disaster in ANY program.

Good call, CAA. I stand corrected. Jethro's resume below:

How does one go from NFL to Temple????

Metro had mierda to work with this year

Porter was out all year

Tyriq weighs 215lbs

Chick gets double teamed and is fat now

Shayon Green has arthritis in both knees

Kelvin Cain lulz

Olsen Pierre just started finding his groove

Moore is 17

Jelani is 17

Ivery is 17

Luther is still a bit out of shape. First time ever passing a conditioning test

Give the man a break

Agree with most of that but chickillo stopped getting double teams months ago.

I've mentioned this several times before. His résumé is impressive at first glance, but makes you scratch your head upon further scrutiny. Also, his units weren't particularly good at those stops.

USC's defenses in '05 and '09 were horrible. That said, they lost a lot of defensive talent off the loaded '04 and '08 teams, so that's not necessarily all on him.

Texans and Buccaneers fans didn't have great things to say, either. Supposedly his units were pretty good at rushing the passer, but bad against the run.

Now I don't know what the circumstances were at all of his coaching stops (other than SC where I know they lost pro talent), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned.

Golden is no dummy, and he's seen Franklin coach up close and personal for 3 years now, so I'll just have to go with that.

If you're looking at head scratching career paths, how about this one?

When he coached the offensive line at Ole Miss for two seasons, he still loved Miami. When he volunteered at NAIA school Lambuth in Jackson, Tenn., he still loved Miami. When he subbed for an ailing coach at Louisiana Tech, he still loved Miami. When he coached two seasons in the United Football League, he still loved Miami.

SMH

I think Golden's ready to go to war with his staff.

Hopefully it all works out.

Stop with this logic, fact and intelligence crap. We can't have that here. Must exude passionate ignorance to survive here. :/

Yeah because it's logical to assume that all the freshmen are 17 years old despite the fact that the average person turns 18 while a senior in HS.

I agree on the point of his post, but there is nothing logical or intelligent about lying to try to prove a point

He left the NFL for USC but jumped back on that train when it was too late. IIRC, Pete Carroll resigned shortly after Jethro's return. Perhaps coach Kiffin wanted to bring in his own D line guy.

Here's what I see from that resume: He was rehired TWICE by good head coaches (Al Golden and Pete Carroll).

BTW - I'm gonna add this, primarily becuase its my "gut feel" about Jethro.

Jethro and I were buddies in college; Partied together fairly often. Even as a younger man, Jethro was always a fatherly type of guy. Kind of a "nicey -nice"goofball personality. I always felt that he would become a good teacher of football. Keep in mind that I havent spoken to Jethro personally in like 15 years (since he left Fresno for the UCLA gig) but my gut feel is that Jethro Franklin is more suited for coaching college age kids, not NFL types. Perhaps his career advanced to where he went to the NFL but ultimately he found that he is better suited for college coaching. Again, this is my opinion based on having known him in a previous life. Food for thought.

Lane Kiffin brought Ed Orgeron with him from Tennessee to USC. That left Franklin looking for a job.

Dis *****'s argument is that it makes a huge difference for a kid to be 18 when he grauates highschool instead of 17

These kids been 18 for less than 6 months.
