James Ash

In my opinion James Ash has all the physical tools you want in a DT, that being said wasn't his play underwhelming at the Orlando opening for someone that has all the physical attributes. Correct if I'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure he did not perform well at the Opening against top competition. It was this one video where he went up against the same OL 3 times and got his **** handed to him each time; it was probably against a high rated OL, but still it would have been good to at least win one rep.
Still can’t teach what he does have. He’s still got time to develop before hitting the field. I’m sure every DL as well as OL has been beaten.

He lost the first 2 reps & won the rest of them, to say he didn't win one rep is exaggerating it.

And I'm not sure how much premium Coaches place on camp reps in shirts & shorts vs in pads, but who knows.

I know everybody thinks Diaz is the worse talent evaluator ever, but I think he probably has some kinda idea as to what type of DL's he likes best in his Defense. If he wants Ash I'm willing to trust that it's based on something he's seen on film & not just for sh*ts & giggles.
All I know is Diaz took Norton, Mcintosh, Gwill and revamped how our DT play has been from previous staffs. I will trust what he wants in his system.

Most recruited Norton as a OL we where one of a few that wanted him at DT

6'2/3 280lbs with 4.79 shuttle & huge hands with a crazy long wingspan, has a great frame & carries his weight well. He's a lean 280, could easily get up to 310lbs & still look like a DE.

This kid is a prototype 3-tech rusher, he had 45tcks 19TFL's & 5 sacks his Junior year. He's disruptive, understands how to engage lineman & shed blocks. This kid stays in the backfield & can really move.

I'm all in with this flip if the staff wants him, I like him at 3-tech DT or even as a Strong Side DE.

Sounds like he’s in the Aaron Donald mold.

This kid can play and like it has been said he has tremendous amount of upside. I'm just not sure if there's much room left. A kid like this wouldn't have to be forced into action like we've had to do the vast majority of the past 10 years and he could actually develop properly both on the field and in the weight room. Maybe we are keeping him hot in case Riggins backs off pledge? I actually think this kid is better than Riggins but 3 DT's is probably all we are willing to take unless a 4th one is special. JMO.

Who do you think is better between Ash & Neal?
I know this was directed at Good Brother Liberty City. But, just to chime in...Ash and Neal are not competing for the same scholarship. They play two different positions/roles on our team.

Looking at Ash, you're better off looking at Riggins and Roberts as a comparison point.

Westley Neal is a guy you look at and compare to Clyde Pinder.

Ash, but they're 2 different types of DT's.

Ash is a pass rushing 3-tech & Neal is more of 1-tech or 0-tech. Neal is a stout run stuffing Nose Tackle, would fit perfect in a 3-4. Ash is a prototypical 4-3 interior rusher, with enough versatility to play DE as well.

I like both, but Ash has the ideal measurables & size you want in a DT for our style of Defense, his upside at the next level gives him the edge imo, but both are very good.
Based on this analysis odds are the staff likes Neal but doesn't think he's a scheme fit for the 4-3 and prefers Ash instead. With Ash physical measurables being so good for a player of his size I'm cool with the take if we can get him to flip.

I have my evaluations on players, and Diaz has his...but, I will say this, he has types and he recruits guys that fit what he wants to do on defense.

If we are going to succeed in the short term, this is the only way its going to happen. Miami can not compete with top schools for the best players right now. It leads to a lot of wasted time and lost spots for good players. So...you've got to evaluate. Trust your system and trust your evaluations.

This is something Miami has not had a lot of success with in recent vintage...evaluating and finding talent. Miami under Coker, Shannon, Golden, and even Richt just kept swinging for the fences on top recruits, saving spots for them, slow playing a lot of lower rated recruits and ended up with nothing. We'll see what Diaz does, but I from what I can see from him through two brief cycles is he refuses to end up with nothing, and that is a BIG LEAP from what we've been doing for over a decade, so I am at least willing to see how his eyetest translates to results.

Even in the 2019 class, we saw Diaz double back on a lot of guys Miami lost track of during Richt's final cycle and we saw him try and dig deep on some late risers. With a full cycle, maybe we dont miss out on DJ Williams, John Dunmore, Maurice Smith, Smith Vilbert, Eugene Asante, Jahmar Brown, OC Brothers, John Dixon.

His measurables aren't
Not really, Neal weighs 30LBs more than Ash and is just as athletic. Ash has the wingspan and hand size that you want in a DT, but that should not be a deciding factor, because the film shows that Neal is better.
