Issues with coach Mike Rumph

How do you know he’s arrogant?

I think he’s just weird.

He's part of the 01' Canes which have a right to be arrogant. But this is not 01' and these are not those Canes. Kids have changed; like they always do. I've seen and heard stories over the last few years that indicates the premise of the thread. If you want to call that hearsay, fine, but the results are what they are. Not horrible, but we are letting too many good players get away.

Rumph is a good coach and an easy target right now. But it needs to be stated he has a major flaw as a recruiter, it's his arrogance with recruits, almost like, "you should be honored to come to the U, and if you don't F U." That's fine for us to feel, but it's a bad look for a guy who is recruiting kids that can literally go anywhere in the country.

The problem is not who we've gotten, I'm taking nothing away from the guys like Young, Bandy, Blades, Frierson. They are true Canes who wanted to play here. But the 17, 18, and 19 S.Fla DB classes are historically great and could be the foundation of a National Title defense, especially with the way the college game is passing-oriented where you need to play 5 or 6 Db's at a time. It feels like a missed opportunity with guys who are only miles from campus.

It's not over with Campbell til' it's over. I will say this, if a 5 Star kid who has known our CB coach since youth league and played for him in High School decides to leave the state. I don't see how that is not an indictment on Rumph, and to some degree his personality and demeanor as a recruiter.

It is an indictment on Rumph, especially when you consider this is the 3rd year in a row that he's lost top targets down the stretch.

We're lucky that even missing on top CB targets, we can get the quality of the 4 guys you mentioned. Though I'm thinking Frierson and Blades may be more suited at S than CB. We really needed to add another great cover CB.

I never believed in someone being a great recruiter. On field results are what matters. Saban gets top kids because he develops talent and he wins. Shannon and Golden missed so many kids because they couldn't produce results. This is the first time there is really no explanation. Rumph is lacking something or has the wrong approach when coming at kids. Just shocking how bad he's missed. I actually questioned whether he could actually coach when he was hired, never thought he would be this inept of a recruiter.

There is a huge sales aspect of being a good recruiter. Some people have it and many don't. Sure, if you're National Champions, it's easier, but some coaches are able to get it done when the on-the-field results are mediocre.

Exactly. And those guys weren't exactly tough sells. Bandy, Blades, and Frierson were born to be Canes and Young followed Richt.

**Appreciate the "moved" label though.

Was Rumph hired in large part because he was seen as a recruiting asset? Yes. Has has he delivered? No. If he were ****canned, would he blackball UM to future recruits who he coaches? Probably. Fact is he is not getting the job done. Tough call for Coach Richt, but that is why he gets paid the big bucks.

This is why you CAN'T EVER hire local South Florida high school coaches. You'll never get any credit for giving them their big shot at the major college level.... but you'll catch **** if you're ever forced to fire them.

All downside, very little upside.

I said it was a bad hire when Richt made it, and it's a bad hire today still.

Miami should NEVER be hiring guys with NO EXPERIENCE.

I am honestly not sure what Rumph does well. Some folks say he can coach, but I saw Wisconsin, Virginia, Pitt, Clemson positively shred our secondary. Our DB’s showed poor technique in those games. That is poor coaching.
It goes without saying he is a poor closer. He can identify talent, but he cannot sell the program worth a ****.

As far as a replacement, I’d like to see someone from the Stoops
tree. Our db’s had their best coaching when Stoops was our DB coach.

I just brushed up on some 19th century German literature, and I came to the realization that good ol' Rumph reminds me a lot of his namesake- Rumpelstiltskin.

1) They both had a good skill (Weaving gold / Coaching up DB's)
2) They both helped people in their time of need (Weeping daughter / Grad transfer DB's)

But when it came down to getting the actual prize they wanted (Infant / Tyson), they failed-

3) They both thought they had what they wanted in the bag (Infant/Tyson), which led them to
4) Celebrate prematurely (Dancing and singing rhymes, which gave away his name / False bravado by him and the staff when in actuality, we're currently nothing better than the 1st loser)

5) And ultimately, they were left with nothing (One leg stuck in the ground & body split in half / No elite DB's to his name)

We can all learn a lot from the past

Here is a link to the short story if anyone would like to brush up on some Canes recruiting Short Stories: Rumpelstiltskin by Brothers Grimm

This.

Let me save you all the suspense and time, Rumph isn't getting fired.

Get it all out of your system now.
