Is experience at QB overrated?

It all depends on what kind of team the guy has around him, how much you are asking him to do, etc... Also helps, IMO, if they are dual threat and can run when need be instead of force balls into tight spots.

All those teams mentioned above were BCS caliber teams that were either dominant on one side of the ball or far more talented than most teams they lined up against.

Good points. Most of those QBs played in read option systems which plays more on natural ability than pro style/pocket systems would which requires the ability to process more information which younger players often times struggle with.

A lot of teams can be said to be BCS level teams that are often a player away, usually QB, from realizing their BCS potential. In the cases I mentioned they found that player in the RS Freshman QBs or first year starters. For some teams with BCS level talent they arent so lucky.
Look at our 2009-2010 teams, a better QB and we're playing in a BCS bowl.

I watched some of the spring game last night for the first time. I have to say, none of the QBs looked good at all. Didn't seem to have much poise and I saw some very poorly thrown balls from both Dewey and Olsen. Very unimpressive to say the least. I know, I know... It was only the spring game. In another thread I stated I thought Brad had a chance to come in and start right away. If he is anything as advertised and is looking as good as some have said, my opinion now is even stronger. BK could be our starter when we play Loserville.

Yes and no, it obviously depends on the player.

And then the coaching staff and the surrounding parts. All those players mentioned had either really good talent around them or really good coaches. You're talking about Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, Chris Peterson, Chip Kelly, and Sumlin off that list alone. And then all those teams had really, really good offensive talent around the QB.

I think people read too much in to the spring game. What I saw was our receivers failed to get any separation and so Olsen had to throw it away a ton.

That says more about how talented Burns and Howard are than anything. Olsen is going up against possibly the best secondary in the country during practice, certainly better than any we will see this season.

Oh but he threw two picks. Well.... one of his picks was blatant pass interference (the receiver was knocked down), the other one Tracy Howard beat Stacy Coley one-on-one for the ball.

I think people confuse depth with talent. In '09 people said, "we have one of the best WR core in the nation". In '10 people said, "we have one of the best RB core in the nation". Now in '14 we have one of the best secondaries? Based on what? Names and numbers? FSU has a better secondary than us.

Based on Tracy Howard and Artie Burns being our starting corners and some combination of Deon Bush, Jamal Carter, and Dallas Crawford being our starting safeties.

Out of those 5 guys, 4 will likely be drafted in the upper rounds. Can FSU say the same?

Don't confuse this year's team with last year's team (starting 4: Howard, Gunter, Highsmith, Rogers)

We have one of the best secondaries in the country, not conference, but country because of those guys? Outside of Tracy Howard, what have any of them done? I don't even know why you even listed Jamal Carter and Dallas Crawford.

FSU has projected 1st round picks in P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby and a former 5-star and freshman All-American safety in Jalen Ramsey.

Like I said you're basing your statement off of names and the fact that we have depth at the position but not production because there really isn't any.

Your argument sounds just like the disagreement I had with a gator fan on this site before the gator game.
He boldly stated that Florida's 4-5 star backfield had 2-3 1st round talents, not even including Hargreaves.
Last I checked none of them even sniffed the early draft rounds, much less any draft rounds.

Howard, Gunter and Especially Burns will all be medium to high NFL draft picks.
Jury's still out on Bush because of injury and Carter, Elder because of inexperience.

Key point is that everyone on our 2 deep in the secondary will probably be drafted at one point or another.

You haters seem to neglect the fact that we've gone from having to play guys like Mike Williams and AJ Highsmith to not even having guys like that on the 2 deep.

Been a bumpy 3 years, but 3 year's of NCAA death penalty uncertainty will do that to a program.

More to the point of the post.

No, experience at qb is NOT OVERRATED.

Just because a few Redshirt Freshmen have success doesn't mean it's the norm.
That success actually proves how important experience is, since it happens so rarely.

That old adage from Bear Bryant generally rings true about the number of freshmen you start generally equates to the number of losses you will have.
I'm pretty sure he was speaking about redshirt freshmen, since true freshmen were not allowed to play back then.

You also do gain experience by playing second fiddle for a couple years learning and practicing ala Vinny Testaverde, Steve Walsh, Craig Erickson, Gino Toretta.

Experience is only overrated if the player in question was not talented to begin with. Talent and experience is the combo you look for. But, I'll take a talented guy with no experience over a dud with experience every time.
