Is experience at QB overrated?

Olsen needs confidence. If he can get it early in the game sky is the limit.

You can say that about any young QB. The key is learning to distribute the ball to the weapons on offense and realize you don't have to have a canon like snickers for this offense to be lethal.

Which is why I said it. Young qbs need confidence so they can believe in themselves and trust their instincts.

no one's mentioned the defenses we play... I expect a better yr out of whomever the starter is, cause he has plenty weapons.

All of those guys had a loaded roster pretty good D to save them didnt need them to make every play plus vets all around

It is somewhat overrated but it is also used as an excuse. Talent above all else is most important but it is easier for a fanbase to say a young kid is not experienced yet, than to outright say he doesn't have the talent.......

It all depends on what kind of team the guy has around him, how much you are asking him to do, etc... Also helps, IMO, if they are dual threat and can run when need be instead of force balls into tight spots.

All those teams mentioned above were BCS caliber teams that were either dominant on one side of the ball or far more talented than most teams they lined up against.

Agree with you here and feel Golden will use it as an excuse if we struggle, and that would be the straw that breaks the camels back for me. There is enough talent on offense to be a productive offense.

I think people read too much in to the spring game. What I saw was our receivers failed to get any separation and so Olsen had to throw it away a ton.

That says more about how talented Burns and Howard are than anything. Olsen is going up against possibly the best secondary in the country during practice, certainly better than any we will see this season.

Oh but he threw two picks. Well.... one of his picks was blatant pass interference (the receiver was knocked down), the other one Tracy Howard beat Stacy Coley one-on-one for the ball.

I think people confuse depth with talent. In '09 people said, "we have one of the best WR core in the nation". In '10 people said, "we have one of the best RB core in the nation". Now in '14 we have one of the best secondaries? Based on what? Names and numbers? FSU has a better secondary than us.

High level competition from Kaaya/Rosier over the next few months should fine tune Olsen. He should be on another level in August.

OP another example for your theory is Kaepernick over Smith in SF.

Based on Tracy Howard and Artie Burns being our starting corners and some combination of Deon Bush, Jamal Carter, and Dallas Crawford being our starting safeties.

Out of those 5 guys, 4 will likely be drafted in the upper rounds. Can FSU say the same?

Don't confuse this year's team with last year's team (starting 4: Howard, Gunter, Highsmith, Rogers)

Forgot one closer to home. Bernie Kosar, RS Freshman -- NC in great upset and greatest game of all time, beginning the reign of THE U! Talent and brains beat experience. Today, some of these young wonders have success because of running not being great passers. I think Olsen wins the starting job, but if Kaaya beats him out then start the kid. We have no time to wait. Need to get the talent on the field.

We have one of the best secondaries in the country, not conference, but country because of those guys? Outside of Tracy Howard, what have any of them done? I don't even know why you even listed Jamal Carter and Dallas Crawford.

FSU has projected 1st round picks in P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby and a former 5-star and freshman All-American safety in Jalen Ramsey.

Like I said you're basing your statement off of names and the fact that we have depth at the position but not production because there really isn't any.

We'll see. Go watch the spring game and go watch Artie Burns and tell me if you'd rather have any one of FSU's corners than him. I wouldn't. That kid is an absolute beast.

People are pessimistic about this defense because of what they did last year, but what you're not realizing is we're about to have a massive upgrade in talent from last year.

I would take the trio of Burns/Howard/Bush over Williams/Darby/Ramsey. But we'll see.

I liked what I saw from Olsen this spring. I saw a kid with all the tools - a rocket for an arm, a good quick release, good pocket movement, can make all the throws. He also looked confident back there, no hesitation, which to me is the biggest thing and you can't coach it.

What he needs to work on is getting better rapport and timing with his receivers, settling his feet to make a throw, and some of his reads. All of that is stuff he can fix with a summer of hard work.

That said, let's be real. With Duke Johnson returning and Joe Yearby coming in behind him, and now with Gus Edwards looking as good as he does, we would be stupid not to be a run first football team. Olsen won't be asked to carry this team on his back year one.

That said, I don't see Kaaya beating Olsen out and that's not a knock on Brad Kaaya.... just think it's going to be hard for him to get in sync with the WR's and learn the offense in such a short amount of time. Had he been here for Spring it might have been different but that wasn't the case.

OP listed a ton of RS freshman who have done very well in college football. Go find how many TRUE freshman have done the same. To my mind, only Matt Barkley, and he was at USC for spring ball. There's a reason for that.

Experience is never overrated. A person can never have too much. But they can certainly have too little.

The rule is QB's need experience to perform a high level. That said there will always be a few exceptions that are playmakers for day one. But it's a mistake to say because a few can do it, they all can do it.

If there's one of those exceptional QB's on the UM roster we'll all be happy. But if you had to wager your house, the safe bet would be no.

Outside of Howard none of those players have proven anything... Darby, Williams and Ramsey have proven their worth... I like Burns but he hasn't done enough to say he'll be in the upper rounds of his draft and the same for Bush... I personally think he struggles in coverage... He always has, however he's a head hunter... If we're going by production, we are not close to having the best secondary in the country... I also thought Burns struggled this spring? He never really committed to spring ball due to track...

We haven't played a game yet and no I wouldn't say Burns struggled, check out the spring game.
