Andrew Luck and was top 20 in passer ratings leading his team to an 8-5 year
Barkley led USC on a game winning drive vs highly ranked OSU while on the way to a 9-4 season as a true freshman.

2008
Kellen Moore led Boise to a 12-1 record as a RS Freshman.

I could go on but you should get the point.

Olsen has the talent and skills. Just needs the confidence and a coaching staff that will play to his strengths and make the game easy for him while he lets his talented surrounding cast do the heavy lifting.

Possibly because there's probably numerous examples of a team with a returning 3rd year or 4th year QB that didn't live up to expectations but the teams you gave an example of were all good teams with good coaches.

The elite players come in as great players and develop to elite players. Great players come in as good players and develop into great players. Sometime good players can develop into elite players but players in need to develop into good players can never be elite and rarely become great.

A lot of those players came in and had to sit a year and learned the playbook and really wanted it also. With Kevin Olsen he struggles to read defenses for whatever reason and had an up and down spring which you dont want in a future star.

There was also a lot of hype surrounding those guys and for good reason. They came out and garnish the hype in spring. Kevin came out and caused concern because he play was so poorly.

so to answer your question it depends on the player if it overrated or not. this year we could have benefited from a veteran QB who really wanted it. Instead we have a QB that struggles and 2 incoming freshmen who are forced into a competition.

Kayaa to me is already in front of Olsen because he posses what great QB have and thats hunger. He has had the playbook for a while and has been praise for knowing calls already. once we get in pads it might be a done deal with Kayaa and Olsen will transfer when its all said and done.

The short answer is no.

Citing a few examples - among thousands - amounts to the exceptions that prove the rule. Occasionally, an otherwise great team - typically with an outstanding defense - will shine notwithstanding an inexperienced QB. But there's no question that you want a QB starting who has been there before.

What has Olsen done at UM to definitively say he has the "talent and skills"? Thus far, he hasn't done anything (that I'm aware of) to demonstrate he's going to be anywhere as productive as the QBs you listed. If anything, he's underperformed, given the expectations surrounding his recruitment.

I hope he turns into a stud, but I haven't seen the evidence of it yet.

What did the aforementioned QBs due prior to there them starting and having success? Hint, they did just as much as Olsen.

Anyhow Olsen was just as highly recruited as they guys I listed. To think he doesn't have skill or talent because you haven't seen in it is an asinine way to think.. But to each his own.

We don't know about Olsen. What we all saw the Spring game he had a very rough day. The rest of his Spring overall was pretty good.

Its an interesting question. Experience is a tricky thing. Bad habits, complacency, etc., sometimes your experience works against you (I'm looking at you Captain of the Titanic).

As that list indicates, all those guys are certainly great players. But they also play(ed) on great teams. It is a bit of a chicken or the egg.

All else being equal, I guess I would rather see what a hungry freshman can do and let them learn than wait to see if a 5th year senior can finally turn it around or "make that leap" to the next level.

I'd be less worried if we still had Fisch. I didnt like everything Jed did but Morris and Jacory had their best years under him. Coley is still figuring out the position and that inexperience combined with a freshman Qb has me worried.

depends on the team, most of those QBs on that list had stacked teams on both sides of the ball

also depends on the system they run too

OP is a drooling ******

all of the examples given were coached by very good to elite coaches. we have Al Gorlden who should have been fired after the Dook game

I'm really optimistic about Kaaya but I think a lot of us are jumping to conclusions about Olsen. Outside of his lackluster Spring Game performance we really have nothing else to base an on-field judgment upon. I take all the rumblings and even the bowl "suspension" with a grain of salt at this point as we have no way of telling if those were motivational ploys by Dr. Alfred, amateur sports psychologist. Want a true assessment of Olsen? See what the players say to the media in August.

Btw, I wouldn't even deem Williams as an "experienced" QB.

I think we got a good insight by watching the Canes Camp reports in the spring. he didn't look that polished even at Green Tree he could be our Defense getting better but who knows. I mean Jamies Winston went up against a Great Defense in Fla St but still shined in practice and the spring game as a Redshirt Freshman.

I agree williams had 1 year of experience he is pretty much RS Sophomore as far as experience goes.

i agree, from what i have seen from olsen is that he is very inconsistent, one scrimmage he looked great making throws all over the field, the next he looked like how he did in the spring game, these are things that happen with freshman QB, now its up to him and the coaching staff to fix this problem, in the end its all up to him, the crashing of cars and drinking and going out late is a little disconcerning but lets see what he does closer to the season

Often an inexperienced player that hits the ground performing like a stud -- e.g. Jameis and Manziel -- was stellar in practice and the preceding spring game. We haven't heard similar accolades concerning Olsen.

This. Kid has all the tools, talent you would want. He just needs to put it all together and do it every time he goes out there.

/watched every second of every spring practice.
