If Miami can get back to running this defense

Welcome to the CIS coaching life cycle.

In years 1&2 we blame the players
In years 3&4 we blame the coaches (you are here)
In 5…well no one knows what happens in year 5 cuz we haven’t made it there yet.
Coach gets fired in year 5 if they make it past year 4, wash, rinse repeat.

Won't happen this time. Got at least 7 more years of it whether it fixes itself or not. Better hope its the players and Mario figures out how to identify and sign better players.

Have been praying every night by my bedside that Guidry used these 2 weeks to install the same 3-3-5 stack alignment used late last season.

You want MORE defensive backs on the field? Are there 5 on the rooster?

I see it the exact opposite. We should run a 6-1. Put Bissainthe or Popo in the middle, cover every lineman and TE with a hat and let the backer run and make tackles.

****...

Are our players dumb? I don't want to believe this.

Maybe it's true, provided how long we have heard this for.

When 1-2 players are out of position and don’t know what they are doing, maybe you can blame it on a player’s football IQ. When the entire defense is out of position and doesn’t know what it is doing, that is a teaching issue. I’ve taught at the university level for 10+ years. People have different ways of learning. Some are kinetic, some are visual, some verbal. Students who didn’t pick up what I was teaching from lectures but learned by reading the textbook weren’t dumber than students who just needed to hear the lecture and learned the concepts. Different ways of learning.

To better explain- look at Sam Shields. When he got to Green Bay, he couldn’t understand the defense. Said the coaches wouldn’t play him because he was totally lost. Was going to get cut. But his veteran teammates took the time to explain concepts and his DB coach even made flash cards for him. And it clicked. He wasn’t dumb for being unable learn the scheme by just watching film and going through the motions on the practice field. He needed the visual information (flashcards) to learn.

This is just my personal theory- I think the issue is how the players are being taught. Guidry teaches one particular way. Maybe it’s just a function of how much time he can dedicate to it since the players have actual college classes they have to go to. Last year the DBs learning style matched Guidry’s teaching style. This year it doesn’t. I also don’t think Kiko is a different player than last year (when he was more effective), I think the safeties covered up a lot of his mistakes. This year since they don’t know what they are doing and are lost on the field , they can’t. Last year if Kiko missed a tackle, it might have resulted in a 12 yard gain at worst. This year it results in a TD because the safeties are spinning in circles trying to figure out where they should be.

Sure don't want the same 5 we've used all year. My 3-point plan for salvaging the unit includes several position switces:

NB Powell (his natural position)
CB Porter (his natural position)
CB OJ (best player on defense)
SS Patterson (sink or swim with him)
FS Brown (his eventual position imo)

this esp regarding kiko. he should never have been a full time starter at LB.

He may want to start by having someone hire his coaches for him - cuz most have been either overrated or terrible

Our defense's inability to get stops directly correlated to our offense getting fewer chances which made our hero QB press. It was masterful game planning by GT as a staff, a record label, and a crew

Our offense needs at bats. It's a very powerful offense, but we're not the most consistent team (recently). We've reverted back to some boom-or-bust tendencies that come when you can't run the ball consistently. That's a Dawson and lack of creativity issue (Lack of tosses and draw plays, lack of pulling OL to "add a hat", Cam doesn't pull to run often enough, etc.) and a Heisman chase issue (not taking the easy throws, looking for the big play)

We have issues on both sides of the ball, right now
If our offense was as efficient as it had been the previous 9 games this season, we would have easily scored more than 28 points. Our offense scores a lot because it’s incredibly efficient. We don’t play at a hyper fast pace nor do we need a bunch of extra possessions to score at a high rate. We had some errant passes and some questionable play calls in short yardage that cost us points and ended drives early. We average .596 points per play which is third in the nation. Against GT we averaged .348. Either the first nine games were an aberration and GT is who we really are or we really are the best offense in the country and we just had one off game.

The defense that Miami ran against Florida will be enough for this team to make a deep run in the playoffs. Luckily Alston and Brown return just in time to make a run. Looking at how different the defense played against Florida vs the defense thats been on the field the last few weeks, it really makes you wonder just how significant of a loss Alston was.

Yes man! What happened to this Defense? Where has it gone?

Not much of a one or two guys can fix the problem believer. I know it is just the highlights but you can see how impactful Alston and Brown were in this game. Those two guys were showing up everywhere in that reel.

We've got bigger problems I am sure, but getting them back is going to help.

The reality is that VT gave everyone the playbook on how to beat our defense. Our offense is loaded with potential NFL talent, but our defense severely lacks it. Us whiffing on DBs in the portal was a massive blow.

The best we're getting out of this defense is a Washington Type Defense, where the O is relied upon every game.

Also, even as bad as the D was against GT, they're not the main reason for the loss. Our offense was atrocious, and we had a chance to win were it not for Cam playing hero ball.
Against GT the offense could have used a few more opportunities, but the defense allowed long sustained drives. GT played keep away.

I think people just look at scores and not film sometimes.

This current UF team is not the same that we whooped, nor is our defense the same as it was that game. Teams can in fact get better or worse throughout a season. Their OL was a disaster against us, and it’s still not amazing but it’s better than in opening game of the season. That tends to happen when you shuffled around guys in the offseason and they now have developed a wee bit of continuity via reps.

Like most of you said, film is out on this defense and the lack of adjustments is very apparent, so OC’s keep doing the same thing over and over. I guarantee you if we played UF again this weekend, they’d score more points than they did in week 1. I’m not saying they’d beat us (they wouldn’t), but they’d look better.

But enough Gator talk, because this is about us. It’s more than just Alston or setting an edge. It’s about schematics, stunting, lack of in-game adjustments (despite everyone hooting and hollering three weeks ago that the defense always plays better in the 2H!!! LOL). We are playing DOG**** offenses and there are posters so engrained in the kool aid that they think a second half turnaround against Duke and Cal was something to celebrate. Something has to change this week, or we will lose first game of the playoff to pretty much whoever we play.

Honestly, I don’t expect much from Wake. This is not a good football team. There’s not much to gain from this. If we look “good”, it’s Wake. We’re 23 point favorites. If we look bad, then this will not get fixed at all in 2024. You can bet any amount of money on that.

If we do what we’re supposed to do, we’re going to get three consecutive games against three different offenses. The first is just a bad team. The second is a pass-happy team that has good weapons. The third (hopefully) is a mobile QB with a great OC. We shall see just how good Guidry is these next three weeks.

Btw, expect to be -10 against Syracuse next weekend.
I expect Wake Forest like any other third string quarterback that has a sprained ankle making his first start against us to manifest into Tom Brady against our defense
